Catching up with my Sophia co-founder Christine Yu is always a blast but especially when we have a #moneydate to talk about financial matters. This week we chatted about building financial confidence. This was so timely as I have recently chatted to 3-4 women about how they could build this for themselves. If we consider where we feel confident in different areas in life, it usually takes time to build it up through an accumulation of successful and failed actions. These work together to snowball into a more confident position. It just does't happen overnight. So, for me, I always come back to financial foundations (savings, debt mgt, credit card mgt) - do you have them setup? Once you feel in control of financial foundations, then you can allocate money and start researching what to do with it. It's always good to align with life goals and your risk profile, but it's just as important to simply get started. Financial institutions, including traditional banks and fintech companies, play a critical role in shaping an inclusive ecosystem for the unbanked and underbanked communities. Individuals in these groups often face significant barriers to accessing financial services, such as a lack of documentation, financial literacy or trust in financial institutions. How best can financial institutions help foster a more inclusive environment? [1] Start by looking at your own work environment. Who do you have on your team and what is their lived experience? How much do they understand about the needs of those who are underserved? [2] Take time to ask the right questions and truly listen. Most importantly, park your bias and don't assume.
