Shame on you Big Tech. Wake up regulators and legislators. The recent Microsoft + CrowdStrike fiasco is not merely a technical glitch. It is a red indicator of the world not yet prepared to use the technology at scale. 1. CrowdStrike is probably OEM for Microsoft. It is taking the blame openly. It's all heartwarming. But where is the accountability for this massive fiasco? Microsoft will have limited liability agreement with CrowdStrike, and each of the affected companies will have limited liability agreements with Microsoft. The impact caused by a technical "glitch" is neither limited nor non-liable. Who is going to pay for the hundreds of millions of consumers, tens of thousands of front-line tech support people and thousands of businesses affected? 2. Microsoft Windows has 50 million lines of code, thousands of configuration options and sub-programs if not tens of thousands of sub-programs. It is - similar to its competitors - is a kitchen sink. We all take a general-purpose system, deploy in a complex operations environment, allow a bunch of third-party software to "play around" and expect things to be peachy. 3. Industrial use tech should have different norms of how they are designed, produced, operated and maintained. Tech today is either consumer centric - such as Apple or Enterprise centric such SAP or Cisco. But Microsoft supports both end user consumers as well enterprise. Though not impossible, a similar crash caused by a system update in Cisco would not have such a long-lasting effect - because it is centralized, and manageable to restore. On the other hand, Desktops are decentralized, most of them probably not managed remotely, and the likelihood of errors happening is high. 3. This is the domain of industrial risk, safety, and reliability. Impacts significantly consumers as well as Business Operations and bottom-lines. Big tech cannot wash off their responsibilities by having limited liability agreements. On the other hand, there are no national bodies that look at systemic complexity and reliability and set standards, regulations and liability mechanisms. Existing bodies are either ignorant or unable to do anything about such disasters. It's time for the standards bodies and regulators to wake up. And Microsoft - insist your OEM partners to test early, and test often.

Despite being one of the most critical technologies that makes the internet work, the Domain Name System (#DNS) is still one of the most misunderstood technologies. My colleague, Richard Wallace, shared a deep dive into the key findings from Vercara’s 2023 UltraDNS Traffic and Analysis report to help you and your organization stay updated on all things DNS. One data point that stood out to me from this report is that Vercara’s UltraDNS platform processed 41.97 trillion DNS queries in 2023. That’s a daily average of 115.01 billion queries per day! This volume of queries highlights not only the internet’s growing demand for DNS services, but also Vercara’s critical role in ensuring that millions of applications across the world remain available. Here at Vercara, we simplify DNS management to ensure seamless connectivity and robust #security for businesses. As Richard shares in his blog, it’s imperative for DNS administrators to stay up to date on emerging trends and collaborate with others to foster a secure and resilient DNS ecosystem. What’s your favorite way to keep up with the evolving landscape?
