Newsletters are for audience ACQUISITION. Podcasts are for audience RETENTION. Ben Bradbury shared this idea on Jimmy Daly’s “Content, Briefly” podcast — and I couldn’t agree with it more. When you’re using paid media to grow your owned audience…focus your media spend on newsletter subscriptions. Build that asset of 1st party data — owned media for the win. Then incorporate the content from your show (especially your clips) into a segment in your newsletter. As newsletter subscribers start to consume your podcast…that’s when they’ll start to fall in love with your thinking (assuming you’re good). Affinity happens when someone spends 20-40 minutes of their week listening/watching you.
