Happy Manufacturing Day 2023! National Association of Manufacturers - NAM my favorite things about manufacturing are the extraordinary people and the inherent complexity that makes every day a challenge. Manufacturing isn't just a career; it's a community, a family that I've been fortunate to be a part of for many years. I have forged friendships that have lasted a lifetime. The people I've encountered along the way have been my mentors, my confidants, and my greatest teachers. They guided me through the early days of learning how to be an engineer, imparted wisdom on managing through difficult change and challenging projects. My second favorite thing about manufacturing is its complexity. When people say, "You can be anything when you grow up," I believe they were talking about manufacturing. The diversity of careers within this industry is endless. And guess what? If you decide to pivot mid-career, manufacturing has those new opportunities as well. Today is Manufacturing Day. It started 11 years ago to bring awareness to our hidden industry and ensure the perceptions and awareness of career pathways was an image reflective of today and tomorrow’s reality. At that time, manufacturing, along with IT and healthcare, was struggling with an adequate pipeline of talent. Here it is in 2023, and I was flying home last night to the message from my daughter’s middle school apologizing for a delay getting the kids home due to a driver shortage. The people shortage is no longer just healthcare, IT and manufacturing – it is arguably every sector. This has an increased impact on our industry. Despite the great work thousands have done since 2012, the importance of opening your doors to young people or sparking interest in your community or school has never been greater. Thank you for all you have done — and continue to do — to bring manufacturing top-of-mind with the next generation of talent. Shout out to all Manufacturing Owners… you had a spark, an idea to do it better, and you made it happen! ✅ Building up our manufacturing guts and capacity again, ✅ Creating awesome career opportunities for today’s students, ✅ Showing our communities what modern manufacturing is all about. Yes, there are honorable manufacturing jobs doing great work in large corporations. And you knew it’d be easier to “go get a job” and ride along with a large company. You weren’t into easy though… You had a dream with a desire for freedom, you hustled, and you made great things! Heck yes! 💪💥 And for all us parents… MFG Day is a perfect time to take a step back and think about the great futures that await our children in the exciting, rewarding, and high-paying world of manufacturing. If only we let them! As I reflect on my career in Manufacturing… It's so good to be moving past when a work day was figuring out how to buy a cheaper part overseas, moving a product line to a low-cost region, and focusing on other end-stage, harvest-mode tactics inside dead-end factories in a flagging industry. That’s why it’s so exciting to be in our MFG community right now… we are thriving and finally getting national attention and well-deserved appreciation!
