Excited to share this story about how we at Manifold are bringing the modern data and AI tools into an area of cancer research that much needs it. Thanks to Jacquelyn Cobb, The Cancer Letter for taking the time to understand the details with Alpa Patel, American Cancer Society and Lauren McCullough, Emory University. There's such a big opportunity ahead to accelerate science. As I say in the article, the scale of R&D investment required is hard for one institution alone, or even one technology company alone, and why it hasn’t happened yet. We're going to get it done by going faster together! #AI #CancerResearch #FasterTogether

Today, I'm speaking on three panels discussing our Brachytherapy innovation work at Mission-Driven Tech and how we're supporting the global Cervical Cancer #Elimination movement. In prep, last night I watched "The Cancer Detectives" on PBS, the revolutionary story of the invention & mass adoption of the Pap Test, the foundational building block of #CervicalCancer prevention. The documentary told the stories of: ➡ George Papanicolaou, the inventor of the Pap Test ➡ Mary Papanicolaou, George's remarkable & incomparable wife, who had *DAILY* Pap Tests for 21 YEARS to advance George's research ➡ Dr. Helen Dickens, a Black female physician pioneer who brought #CervicalCancer screening to Black women by building trust and offering care in community Before the Pap Test was introduced, Cervical Cancer was the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among American women. Following mass adoption, diagnoses dropped more than 70%. How did this small circle of physicians & public health activists change the world? 💥 Breakthrough scientific research: discovery, invention & innovation that established an entirely new screening system for cancer prevention 💥 Coalition building with a single shared goal: a remarkable and unusual team with a clear vision: save American women from cancer 💥 Powerful people using their platforms to promote change: government, medical, community & pop culture leaders including Lucille Ball smashing stigma to promote the Pap test 💥 Acknowledgement of systemic racial biases: community efforts, specifically led by Dr. Dickens, to bring screening to Black communities for all women to access care 💥 Translating science to the public with media: news, magazine & community efforts to educate, encourage & empower women, creating a new demand engine where by 1958, women were *independently asking their doctors for the Pap Test* I don't often point to medical practices from the 1950s as a blueprint for change today. However, this documentary gives me hope that timeless strategies rooted in science and activism laid the foundation to end Cervical Cancer 70 years ago, setting up the fundamentals for us to now realize #Elimination today. Today is #WorldCancerDay. This year's theme continues to address closing the gap on care, and create awareness for more equity in cancer treatment regardless of income, education, location and discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age disability and lifestyle. Learn from the video how our Head of the Centre for Cancer Innovations, Dr Jessamy Tiffen, is working to close the gap in cancer research on why women are more likely to survive cancer compared to men. Centenary is committed to cancer research, and to uncovering innovative discoveries to confront inequity in care and investing our resources to achieve a just and cancer-free world. #closethecaregap #centenaryinstitute #worldcancerday #cancerresearch #cureforcancer

“Imagine a future state where you get data—whether it's generated from a biologic specimen or provided to us from a participant or through some other data source—those data are interconnected at the individual level, ready for analytic use. And then, on the backend, you have an analytic environment where you can safely have researchers come in and work with those data. Think about the acceleration of science in that future state.” -Alpa Patel, American Cancer Society AI is creating the foundation cancer researchers need to accelerate their work and get answers faster, read the full story in The Cancer Letter's latest article ⬇

Thrilled to share insights on AI's potential to revolutionize cervical cancer screening in Zimbabwe (and other LMICs) at the Unitaid session "Women at the center"! As Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc works with the Zimbabwean government and partners to scale up screening towards very ambitious global and national targets, AI offers a powerful solution alongside existing tools like HPV testing and self-sampling. AI-assisted VIA can significantly improve: Accuracy: Reducing human error and leading to earlier diagnoses. Efficiency: Overcoming known limitations of traditional VIA and potentially reaching more women with fewer resources. Accessibility: Expanding screening services to remote areas with limited healthcare workers. This will translate to better health outcomes for women at risk, particularly in rural areas. #AIDS2024 #CervicalCancer #AIinHealthcare #WomensHealth #Zimbabwe Judith Neilson Foundation
During a Q&A at the "Women at the centre" event, AI's promise in Zimbabwe's cervical cancer program was underscored. With only 200 VIA facilities for 3.5M women, AI could boost accuracy, efficiency and coverage, especially in rural areas.

Join us on #WorldCancerDay, this February 4th, to advocate for equal cancer care. #WorldCancerDay2024 is more than a call to action; it's a commitment to end disparities in healthcare. Cancer's impact is felt differently by each person, highlighting the need for a world where one's chance of survival is not determined by their place of birth, economic status, or ethnicity. At Dimensions Sciences, we are pioneering change, supporting a diverse scientific community with scholarships and mentorship support. This initiative not only cultivates a more inclusive scientific community, but it also accelerates our journey toward identifying novel ways to cure cancer and other diseases. As we approach World Cancer Day, we are grateful for everyone involved in this fight—scientists, healthcare professionals, patients, and advocates. Your dedication is pivotal to our collective mission of improving cancer care worldwide. We invite you to help close the care gap. Discover how your support can make a difference by visiting our website. Your support, in any form, is invaluable. Together, we can make cancer care accessible for all. This is a great example of a leader with a strong digital presence. Michel Reid emphasizes the importance of building trust and understanding, particularly with historically underrepresented groups. This focus on inclusivity shows a commitment to equity and diversity, key traits of good leadership. By partnering with organizations like the Tigerlily Foundation, he also demonstrates a proactive approach to reaching out to specific communities. This targeted outreach helps address the unique needs of these groups, fostering trust. Building trust with people is extremely important and a step to building loyalty, which was talked about in Start With Why, How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. One example given in the book was about Apple. Sinek explained that although Apple is not the pioneer of their industry, nor has products that are objectively better than competitors, the loyalty from customers is what keeps them in business. #LIDCSU24
Building trust and understanding is vital to ensure people most impacted by a particular disease, including historically underrepresented groups, are included in clinical research. Today, to mark World Day for Cultural Diversity, we’re sharing how we’ve partnered with the Tigerlily Foundation to raise awareness and empower Black communities on the benefits of enrolling in clinical trials for chronic diseases and cancers. Watch this powerful film featuring my friend Maimah Karmo, founder of the organization, as she talks about her transformative journey with breast cancer, the impact of clinical trials and the importance of working with communities to understand people’s different needs and help achieve equitable health outcomes. #WDCDDD #InclusiveResearch #ClinicalTrialDiversity #HealthEquity
