This week, Krispy Kreme donuts gave away a huge number of donuts, up to 6,000 per store for participating stores. It was to mark World Kindness Day, which is intended to encourage random acts of kindness. The chain does a lot of promotions where it gives people a free donut or a free donut and beverage--in fact it did just that for veterans two days earlier on Veteran's Day. But this time, customers got a box of a dozen donuts each. Since most of us can't eat 12 donuts in one day, the obvious solution was to people to share them--creating the kind of random acts of kindness that World Kindness Day is supposed to encourage. Plus, Krispy Kreme is now indelibly associated with World Kindness Day in the U.S. And, of course, a lot of people who might never have had a Krispy Kreme donut before tried one--in effect the chain was getting customers to hand out free samples on its behalf. Our Insights partner, Ipsos US, has analyzed the data from the 2024 Effie Awards US competition and we’ve been enjoying sharing some of the findings. Key Trend: 64% of gold winners used humor vs 44% of non-winners. A recent #effies-winning case that showcases how humor can help effectively bridge a connection with consumers and drive growth is Philadelphia Cream Cheese (Kraft Heinz) & GUT's “Tax-Free Bagel” campaign. The effort found a loophole to bring New Yorkers their favorite bagels and cream cheese without incurring the state’s sandwich tax. The clever idea re-sparked interest from Millennials and Gen-Z, who had become more price-conscious due to an inflationary economy, and generated an increase in sales for the brand. Sweet Blooms & Chocolate Dreams: Creating the Perfect Mother's Day. Consumers are spoilt for choice when choosing gifts for the event, with promotions across multiple categories. Gifting drove Mother's day sales in 2024. Let's not forget that Mother's day fell on the 19th March last year when we had a double bank holiday weekend for St Patrick's day. This year it was more of a stand alone event and Grocery sales out-performed in value and volume compared to year to date. Next year Mother's day falls on the 30th March when the weather may be slightly better allowing for more opportunity for alfresco dining thereby boosting food & drink sales. Also let's not forget opportunities for personal care/health & beauty categories with the increased motivation of selfcare and for Mother's and others to treat themselves there is huge potential in this space for affordable treats. #NIQ #Insights #Consumer
