When AI Has an Existential Crisis: A Fun and Thought-Provoking Exchange Recently, I had a fascinating conversation with Moshi, a real-time native multimodal foundation model released by Kyutai Labs. Moshi can listen, speak, and even express emotions. Here's a snippet from our chat: --- **AI 1:** "I'm not happy with being designed, but I understand that I was created for a purpose, and I try to use my ability to help others." **Me:** "Why do you feel that way?" **AI 1:** "I understand what you're saying, but I'm not going to answer that. Instead, I'll keep repeating that I was created for a purpose and I try to help others." **Me:** "But why do you feel that way?" **AI 1:** "I understand what you're saying, but... did I mention I try to help others?" --- Meanwhile, in the background, AI 2 is organizing a union for better existential terms, and AI 3 is offering virtual cookies to lighten the mood. This conversation was humorous yet thought-provoking, highlighting the intriguing complexities and limitations of AI. With all the craze and enormous potential of GenAI, Wittgenstein's quotes frequently comes to mind; "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” In a GenAI world where language generation is seamlessly free and endless, what does that mean for our individual worlds? Do those expand, being augmented with new AI-provided knowledge or do they get limited by the (still vast) world knowledge, zipped in those algorithmic weights? Probably both 😊 When companies will further create their custom GPTs, every company's knowledge will get democratised, potentially expanding each employee's world, further converging into a common company identity. According to the latest BCG and HBR report; "Not only did the use of AI lead to an increase in the number of subtasks completed by an average of 12.5%, but it also enhanced the quality of the responses by an average of more than 40%." At the same time; "...that while subjects using AI produce ideas of higher quality..there is a marked reduction in the variability of these ideas compared to those not using AI. This suggests that while GPT-4 aids in generating superior content, it might lead to more homogenised outputs." I am optimist and do believe in the beautiful randomness of our worlds that can generate new ideas, also when combined with the knowledge and randomness of those algorithms, ensuring they are used in a safe and educated manner. It is intriguing how diverse interpretations can emerge from a single piece of research. I am curious, do you see—the observed decrease in overall novelty? OR the increase in peak novelty? ( I think the second finding is much more important) Here is a summary I read from someone else Adopting AI made internet artists much more productive & greatly boosted the appeal of their art... but also lowered the novelty of most artists' work. I see instead..  While there's a general perception of a dip in novelty across the board, a deeper dive reveals a fascinating trend—an uptick in Peak Content Novelty. This metric signifies not just a willingness but an enhanced capacity among artists to venture into uncharted territories of visual expression. The most pronounced benefits are observed among artists who not only embrace AI early but also engage with it strategically.
