PR versus “Performance PR.” There’s a huge difference, and we’re claiming the latter. Standard PR includes news about awards, senior hires, and opening new offices. “Performance PR,” on the other hand, includes Analyst Relations updates and pick-ups by national publications that go to a landing page. A star only shines brightly when the conditions in the sky are right. A Marketing VP in a leading global tech company reminded me of this phrase from early in my career the other day. Essentially - in one company, you might be a superstar, and in another not shine as brightly. The VP of Marketing had hired a couple of people with whom she had worked in the past. In the previous company, they were trusted and performed really well. She has moved on and grown and decided to bring in the trusted past team members as safe bets. BUT - it did not work out 2nd time around. Why? A variety of reasons, but probably the most important 2 are: 1) The previous company had a different culture and just because you can adapt does not mean everyone can. 2) We are all humans, and we change. Things happen in our lives that mean we might have a shift in priorities, or we might connect well with an individual but both change. It can be very difficult when you move to work with a trusted colleague and it does not turn out well, leaving a sour end to a once-strong relationship. #marketingleaders #techmarketing
