The next generation interconnectors Interconnectors already provide a way to share electricity between countries safely and reliably. But what if they could do much more than that? What if interconnectors could become an offshore connection hub for green energy? Instead of individual wind farms connecting one by one to the shore, offshore hybrid assets (OHAs) will allow clusters of offshore wind farms to connect all in one go, plugging into the energy systems of neighbouring countries.

Ever heard of the 10H rule in Bavaria? It stipulates the minimum distance between a wind turbine & the nearest settlement must be 10 times the turbine's height. With modern turbines reaching 200m, onshore #wind projects face a halt in permitting. Ember's new analysis finds that if the 10H rule was reduced to: 📈1000m, existing wind capacity could triple to 9 GW - increasing annual wind power generation to 14 TWh (+10 TWh). ↗️ 800m, the potential capacity could jump to 15 GW (22 TWh). From 1995-2024, wind turbine innovation boomed, growing turbine sizes to 15-18 MW today and driving significant cost reductions in #OffshoreWind deployment. While shifting to larger turbines too quickly has risks, larger turbines have multiple benefits including increased energy production, more efficient use of space and foundations, and the potential to generate power at lower wind speeds, amongst others. Turbine size will play an important role in future offshore wind cost reductions. To continue progress, well-designed government policy and industry practice are needed to mitigate technical and business risks as well as transportation and installation complexity.
