Ophthalmological conditions are often a result of systemic problems. Sometimes dogs will present to an ophthalmologist and get diagnosed with a disease that is unrelated to the eye. Endika Garcia. RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Ophthal., our ophthalmologist, was presented with a dog with multiple subcapsular lens opacities. This patient's eye issues were caused by hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium) due to hypoparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism can result in calcium phosphate crystal deposition within the lens, which is what can be seen in this image.
