I remember being a new sales rep in the office on December 31st and hearing people cheering about a deal. I asked what was happening and they were all excited because a rep drove to the buyers house on New Years Eve and sat in their driveway waiting until the client signed the paperwork. What confused me was why everyone was cheering about this. Why are we celebrating a rep that had to get a deal in this way? Shouldn't we be cheering for the people who got their deals in earlier in the month? The ones who didn't have to stalk their clients in their driveways to get the deal done? I promised myself from that moment on that I would never, ever do that. I hit my sales targets every year and never had to beg or stalk my clients. I laugh when companies talk about how the customer comes first and yet have leaders that celebrate practices that promote the complete opposite. What are you thoughts on this? Have you ever been told by a leader to drive to a clients house to demand the paperwork? When do you draw the line? What do you recommend that a sales person do in this situation? #leadership #sales

Recently, I heard about a conversation that happened between one of our standout sales team members and their manager during a particularly challenging month: Top Performer: “I’m beginning to question whether I should take on more leads. I worry I might not be maximizing opportunities for the dealership. Perhaps someone else could make better use of them.” Sales Manager: “I want you to know, I’ve observed your approach with customers and your pitch. I have complete confidence in your abilities.” Despite the encouragement, the top performer was struggling with self-doubt: “My performance isn’t reflecting the effort. I’m putting in everything I’ve got, and it’s still not showing in my numbers.” The manager responded with reassuring simplicity: “Don’t worry. The key is to keep moving forward.” Observing this salesperson in the days that followed, tirelessly dedicating himself, giving his 200%, was a testament to the manager’s leadership. It showed me how a timely, supportive conversation can significantly uplift someone. I discovered the vital role a sales manager plays in guiding and inspiring their team through highs and lows.

This is a special sales team. Yesterday, we had our on-site Quarterly Business Review. What's a Sales QBR?  It's a full day where sales leadership, account executives, solutions, and rev ops all come together to extract the learnings from the previous quarter, to apply in the upcoming one. Each Leader and Account Executive prepared an individual 30-minute presentation for the group showcasing Q1 self-reflections, an analysis of areas to be optimized, and a game plan for how each is going to achieve success going forward. This comes after absolutely nailing an ambitious Q1 target.  Many teams might take the week celebrating. But for us… all we are thinking about is how we can do BETTER. While the quarter was strong… There is always room for improvement.  There are more merchants we can serve. There are ways we can serve them even better. Coming out of yesterday, I have more clarity than ever of this sales team's trajectory. And I can't help but be incredibly impressed by the hunger, desire, love, and effort that I see. 🙌

How to close more if you’re new in sales you ask? Stop 🛑 Talking. The amount of times I’ve seen new sales people have a contract commitment by the client and instead of us saying “great … I’ll have that contract out to you immediately”… We end up talking ourselves out of it by continuing to spill out how great our product / service will be and all perks and benefits…… blah blah blah suddenly….. “You know what, let me think it over a little more”. All because we couldn’t help ourselves as sales people and we kept on talking. So if I can share a small piece of advice to new sales professionals is this ….. Once you get to contract… Stop Talking. However…. Once you get the contract signed …. Do the right thing and reassure your client what a great decision this was and how well you and your team will deliver on the promise made. Then deliver. MIND THE GAP One of the largest disconnects in business is that between Sales and Operations. The translation of what is sold to what is executed can be a challenge especially in customized offerings. Sales leadership needs to ensure this as margin is totally dependent on this. There must be sufficient resources to allow sales to perform this function thoroughly and not pressure the team back into the trenches before the transition is complete.
