If all current commercial satellite plans were to be realized within the next decade, we would have more, possibly substantially more, than 65 thousand satellites circling Earth. Mainly the Low Earth Orbit type, as we know from SpaceX's StarLink satellites. Today, that number is less than 10 thousand, with more than half that number realized by StarLink's LEO constellation over the last couple of years (i.e., since 2018). The Space Race is on and will be a far more exciting place to be, technology-wise, than pure terrestrial telecommunications dealing with the variations of the current G leading to the next G (which, anyway, seems to be Groundhog Day all over again). As it looks today, Europe (and many others) will be standing on the sidelines watching the USA and China "battling out" the Space Race. In all likelihood, we will end up with two dominant satellite constellations: a commercial US-based one (guess the winner) and one controlled by China. Leaving a few crumbs to the niche. It seems to me that Europe is snailing towards the last place again, being left to attempt to legislate and regulate but largely being left out of the technology monetization opportunities clearly present in the Space Race (not to mention the obvious super critical Security & Defense aspects in this Race). So all those 'market experts' and legacy space company execs who kept saying - long after the shift was apparent to anyone paying attention - that "GEO was here to stay" and "LEO's a fad" should be eating big slices of humble pie now that SES and Intelsat are consolidating in the hopes of living to fight another day (shades of ULA vs. SpaceX, anyone?). Are they? Nah. You need to possess a fair bit of self-awareness to do that, as it's a whole lot easier to exchange one set of socially-permissible views for another, especially when it makes sense financially. I say this because the big outfits and their market gurus are now stampeding down to LEO because mass production met smallsat almost a decade ago and the results - Starlink and the like - are pretty spectacular. So the trend is obvious, right? It must be all about LEO now, maybe even 'now and forever?' No, it's not. It's all about cost. Once it became inexpensive to deploy proliferated constellations that could do what GEO birds do (and perhaps do better?), that's what we did. And that, folks, is what's going to drive us back (big time) to operating in higher orbits - namely, that it's going to get inexpensive. So will the experts- or the bigs - catch the shift back or will they lag? I know where I'm laying my bet. Same place I laid it on ULA vs. Elon. 🚀

LEO time Although i am not fully aligned with the conclusion of this article (to get a real worldwide service up ang running, AST SpaceMobile will need much more than one single active and working satellite in orbit), this is definitely a good read to catch up on all investments happening in the field of direct-to-cell. Scale matters in this field, and I do think SpaceX has the tremendous advantage of being able to launch hundreds of satellites quickly and having a ready-made backhaul infrastructure with laser links to Starlink satellites and down to Starlink ground infrastructure. #LEO #satcom #connectivity
