We were excited to see many new technologies being showcased for improving ATM and the challenges faced with the integration of advanced air mobility, sustainability and autonomy, of particular significance in the complex UK airspace. 👏 A great month for EUROCONTROL's #LARA tool, integrated by Finland 🇫🇮 into their tactical airspace management processes & recognised at #AIW2023 with the prestigious Civil-military Cooperation Award 😊. LARA – the Local And sub-Regional Airspace Management Support System, in full – is a tool that improves States' tactical airspace management processes by integrating civil ✈️ and military users in a joint platform that applies #AFUA advanced flexible use of airspace principles to enable #CDM collaborative decision-making & provide live situational awareness to all actors. 👉 LARA makes it easier for controllers to activate and de-activate quickly airspaces to balance civil and military airspace needs, and react to last minute changes and short-notice requests in a way that keeps all airspace users instantly informed. This in turn unlocks more direct routes & enables CO2 emissions to be reduced 👍. LARA is ideal for both States and the EUROCONTROL Network Manager as it: ☑️ enhances real-time enhanced situational awareness ☑️ improves traffic predictability ☑️ permits seamless cross-border coordination & facilitates efficient cross-border operations. In short, LARA is a highly successful concept that represents best practice in civil-military cooperation, as the award collected by François C. 📢 🇨🇱 Chile's Milestone: World's First Solar-Powered Air Traffic Control Radar. 🌎 In a significant leap towards environmental sustainability and air safety, Chile has unveiled the world's first air traffic control radar powered entirely by solar energy. Located in the Atacama Desert, this radar station, commissioned by Chile's Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) from the French technology company Thales, marks a milestone in aviation industry. 🙌 Positioned over 3,500 meters above sea level, the radar station boasts 340 strategically placed solar panels to ensure uninterrupted power supply. This innovative technology will facilitate air traffic control and surveillance, both civilian and military, in northern Chile—an area of strategic importance for aviation in the Andean nation. 🔆 According to statements from the DGAC, this initiative propels Chile to the forefront of sustainable practices in civil aviation, ensuring secure air traffic surveillance in the region. On the sidelines of Eurosatory, a biennial defence and security exhibition held on 17–21 June in Paris, Thales announced that the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will be acquiring the Ground Master radars. Omnisys, a subsidiary of the French prime in Brazil, will carry out support and maintenance activities. The Department of Airspace Control (DECEA), through the Airspace Control System Implementation Commission (CISCEA), signed the contract for the procurement of the radars on 17 June. The number of systems being purchased, the expected delivery date, and the cost of the procurement are yet to be announced. “We are proud to serve the Brazilian Air Force and DECEA. With a long presence in this country, local footprint with Omnisys, and a strong installed base of more than 100 Air Traffic Control (ATC) radars, this is a new milestone in our collaboration,” said Eric Huber, Thales’ Vice President, Surface Radars. ***** Also at Eurosatory, Thales signed four agreements with Emirati and Ukrainian companies. These included a declaration of intent to form a strategic partnership with the UAE’s KATIM and two agreements with JSC Ukrainian Defense Industry to create a joint venture in Ukraine and develop local maintenance capabilities. In a strategic shift towards a more data-centric defense with an emphasis on Asia-Pacific, Airbus U.S. Space & Defense, under CEO Rob Geckle, is fortifying its capabilities across domains from the ground to near-space. Leveraging their robust U.S. and NATO industrial footprints, Airbus is focusing on innovating and rapidly deploying technologies, particularly in Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) and connectivity for all-domain operations. Their offerings include resilient mesh networks for JADC2, satellite buses for the Space Development Agency, and optical communication terminals for the Department of Defense (DoD). 2023 russian airbase activity – or – the pressure of Ukraine’s counter offensive Data from radar satellites showed two peaks in Russian military airport activities. 21 airbases near the Ukrainian border and on occupied Crimea were analyzed. The peak in June/ July clearly shows that the Russian airforce was indeed under pressure from the Ukrainian counter offensive. But we can also see an activity increase since November 2023. How is the activity measured? SAR satellites (synthetic aperture radar) send out radar signlas, which are then scattered back by the earth’s surfaces and measured again by the satellite. The amount of energy going back to the sensor depends on several factors, but mainly two: surface material and geometry. That is why, aircrafts can be detected very well with such satellites: the metal and the shape create quite a large signal – at least a much higher signal, that the flat concrete on airfields. Now when we have several hundred satellite images over one year, we can compare the amount of energy scattered back throughout the year and therefore estimate, if a lot of aircrafts, vehicles or whatever have been on the bases or not. As part of a series of work I set out to try and lessen this by demystifying why Leonardo's life-saving Miysis #DIRCM (Directed Infra-Red Counter Measure) is a must-have in contested airspace, what a DIRCM is and how it can be relatively easy to install on aircraft therefore playing a key role in protection of People, Platform & Mission.
