Wow😳. This popped up on our fb feed. 7 years ago Scott and Hayden sitting on the roof of our downtown McKinney office having a cold one. Time is flying by. We’re thankful to reflect and know we had Hayden, with Matthew and Gloria interning, and the team is still together 7 YEARS later. We’ve expanding to Sydney and tripled in size since then. I'll be honest, I don't know if this is typical or not - my gut says no - but this is clearly a company that truly believes each of those people is part of the San Francisco 49ers team. They don't play on the field, but this shows these individuals that you believe their work helped the team accomplish its goals. This is a great example of inclusive organizational #leadership! While it’s not always possible to fly every FTE to every event, I applaud the 49ers for setting an example here — especially in the era of hyper-segmentation and favoritism amongst teams. Finding a way to acknowledge the contribution of all employees, whenever possible, goes a long way toward reducing silos, decreasing intra-office resentment, creating healthy workplace culture, and motivating folks to do their best work. #Superbowl #inclusion #culture #belonging

It's a lot lot easier to align when the business is small, because those who needs to know are either in the break room or at the kitchen table. One big piece of governance is education and succession planning for NextGens and spouses that married in. So, when we were all in #Birmingham for Thanksgiving a few weeks ago, we hosted a Family Meeting with owners, spouses, and kids led by advisors and key TEAmmates. What do you do at a Family Meeting? Business, first, of course. We educate about our company, industry, and governance. This meeting, we enjoyed a plant tour of our #Homewood manufacturing and distribution center. Then, we met about the duties and responsibilities of ownership. We acknowledged that the duties for family members to interact with the business are even greater that other associates. And, we shared the reality that it's not just going to be "inherit," there has to be merit, hard work, and contribution to be ready, and to overcome assumptions that DNA got you a job, an internship, or an opportunity. Next up, had to be a little fun too so we headed to Topgolf for a some healthy competition on the course. (Yes, I lost 🤣 ). It's important to talk to kids early about family business because this is a very long journey. I'm not sure what will happen with my kiddos. But I am sure that it's the right thing to educate loudly, repeatedly, and early-on that with great opportunity comes even greater responsibility. If you're not ready when that opportunity comes, it will fly past you, especially if it is on a rocket ship like Milo's. Critical to have the one on one partner mentor and associate liason. A firm with a real interest in the summer student will have 20 minutes with the partner every day and at least a one hour session every week. Every summer student interested in business law should be on two deal teams at all times. Show you care.

Last Halloween I was working for a client in the West End. I walked into their office through a black and orange balloon tunnel, into a reception totally decorated for Halloween, a breakfast bar of Halloween treats, face painting and many people in costume… You get the picture! I was impressed by the effort and expense invested in this one day. The vibe was fun, engaging and energising. My son, who is on the autistic spectrum has recently started an apprenticeship in finance. At the weekend I casually asked is your office dressing up for Halloween. He looked horrified and replied with a series of questions. Is that a thing? Do I have to? Why? Organisations that do invest, time and money, in such events and initiatives (which I have always admired) do need to take into account the neurodiversity of their teams. What may appear to be fun and exciting to some is stressful, unnerving, and disruptive to others. It can quite easily make some team members feel more like “outsiders”, alienated and that they don’t fit in around here! I had to pinch myself, Popcorn kitchen is a B Corp 🚀🫣🍿 When you’re a bustling challenger brand, success is often defined, not simply by the company you keep but the larger influence groups you become part of, which helps explain the immense sense of pride Popcorn Kitchen feels today having secured B-Corp status (June 24) to become part of an increasingly vocal 2,000 strong family of purpose-led businesses championing the very highest social, ethical and environmental standards. Our journey started in 2022, working with Paul Hargreaves CEO at Cotswold Fayre, a certified B Corporation who championed B Corp as a purpose led approach to running your business, I was hooked, a purpose led business, tell me more !!! As a small team, resource was always going to be an issue so in 2023 Jill Smith 🎁 told me about internships from Cranfield School of Management I put the wheels in motion and we were given the green light for two ( Vaisakh Kadesseriyil and Aditya Solanki ) MSc undergraduates in Business Management to undertake a four month internship to lay out the foundations for Popcorn Kitchen’s bid aided and abetted by the indomitable Andy Hawkins Hawkins (B-Corp ambassador) and the irrepressible Elizabeth Tate Tate (B-Corp consultant) who joined forces with the Popcorn Kitchen team, including Sorrell Cowen from Reewild to begin off-setting our carbon footprint and to ensure no stone was left unturned in the quest for B-Corp acceptance. Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more. "Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities.
