Survivors of fatal blows often suffer from a unique kind of emotional numbness. They become indifferent to the world around them, as nothing seems to affect them anymore. Happiness and sadness are both fleeting emotions that seem to have lost their grip on them. They've come to realize that nothing lasts forever, and this realization can be quite isolating. Even in the midst of a crowd, survivors of fatal blows often feel alone. It's important to remember that everyone experiences grief and loss differently. International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is an event in which survivors of suicide loss come together to find connection, understanding, and hope through their shared experiences. According to the CDC, in 2019, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death for all ages in the United States. As the second leading cause of death for ages 10–34 and the fourth leading cause for ages 35–54, suicide is a major contributor to premature mortality. Your family would rather struggle with you than without you. Please, if you're struggling, reach out to a heart with ears. If someone reaches out to you, reach back. You never know what they're going through unless you ask. Also, by asking the direct question if someone you know or love is thinking about harming themselves, be prepared for a "yes" answer on what you'll do or say next. Know, that by asking that question, you're not planting that seed in their mind either. And, they may feel relieved that you asked because few would ask that direct of a question. Be prepared to call the proper authorities to step in and intervene if someone responds with a "yes" to that question.
