As I complete five years at Lowe’s, I find myself reflecting on the past and considering what I can take forward as a leader. Lowe’s is a wonderful company that offers many opportunities for anyone to thrive. I am grateful to my team, my leaders, and everyone who has helped me successfully complete these five years. I look forward to many more years ahead. Some of the accomplishments our team has delivered over these five years include: - Transitioning from monolithic systems to a service-oriented architecture - Shifting from Waterfall to Agile methodologies - Moving from program/project to product-oriented thinking - Seamlessly migrating .com to the cloud - Delivering enterprise and omni-channel services and experiences to support stores and digital platforms - Thriving during the COVID surge, when insurmountable traffic came from digital channels - Creating adaptive and category-based customer experiences - Solving problems that are customer and business-centric - Building best-in-class site reliability, product, and engineering teams Of all our achievements, I am most proud of supporting the career aspirations of many associates. I am also proud of what the team has achieved, even during difficult times like COVID. Here’s to many more accomplishments in the future.

When we started Rubrik, I wanted people to meet me where I was. I learned quickly that the opposite was true: I had to meet people where they were. Everybody has unique motivations, psychic responses, and ways of being in the world - which means that you can’t apply what works for one person to an entire group. To build a successful company, I had to adjust my approach to leadership accordingly. I had to let go of my assumptions about what worked for everyone, because they were based on what worked for me. Instead, I had to meet people where they were. That didn’t mean sacrificing my goals for the company. It meant setting those goals and then working backwards to align them with my team members’ unique motivations and skill sets. That’s how we were able to find success: by acknowledging and celebrating the differences among our team, and structuring our goals to accommodate them.

Yesterday I celebrated my 15th anniversary at Amazon. No idea where the time has gone. Feels like a blink of an eye and a life time at the same time. I love my team, my amazing manager Amy Ruddell, and my job (mainly because of the smart people I work with). That hasn't always been the case, it’s been a ride with ups and down to get here, lost myself in the job at times, but grew more than I ever could imagined. Here’s what I’ve learned to thrive in a high-demanding company:   - Love what you do, or leave it. Life’s too short to do something you hate. - Say yes to opportunities. Do something that makes you uncomfortable. Whether you succeed or not, you’ll always expand your mind and skills. - Find as many role models and mentors as possible, there are many people to learn from. - Focus on what makes the biggest impact to your customer, not what/who makes the most noise. Push back on 'busy work'. Deadlines are most often artificial. Escalations are only truly urgent if lives are impacted. - All employees are human, nobody is above or below you, regardless of their level and position. Tread everyone with respect while staying true to your principles and instincts. - You are the owner of your work-life-harmony. Set healthy boundaries. Ask your leadership to help prioritizing, if needed. - You are the owner of your career path. Ask for what you want and need, nothing will be handed to you if you're not clear where to go and how to get there. - A bad manager can not only block your career path but also impact your mental and physical health. Choose a manager who fosters growth, independence, uniqueness and a healthy work climate. - Life is about connections. Care about people around you. Make time to ask them how they are, truly. Most importantly: Don’t lose yourself in your job. Stay holistically happy. Take care of your physical and mental health, have creative hobbies, foster your social connections. If you’re a happy human, you can be a much better employee, too.

It’s my 24-year anniversary at Microsoft today and whilst I will save the bells and whistles post until this day in 2024 (hoping), I wanted to take a moment to answer the question I get asked most frequently – “What exactly do you do?”. The truth is, no two Chiefs of Staff do the same thing. It really depends on your own set of strengths and what your Principal (in my case, VP) needs from you. All Chiefs of staff need a blend of emotional intelligence, big-picture thinking, and the ability to know a little about a lot of things. They also need humility – this is a senior role, but it won’t be about making yourself the star, it’s about making your Principal and team look good. I often tell people asking about the role that you have to be ok with being the bridesmaid and not necessarily the bride! In my personal experience, it’s incredibly rewarding, ever-changing and it allows me to keep learning and growing. Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. I’ve shared below a snapshot of what it means to be a Chief of Staff in my own personal experience. It’s the perfect time of year to take reflect on your progress, take stock of your current position and dream about your boldest destination. A framework I have used successfully for years is to review: - where I was then. What was the baseline when I started? - where am I today. Am I making progress? - where I am going tomorrow. Dreaming about my boldest ambition? It’s important when you start any pursuit to take a baseline of the current state. When I started at Rubrik a little over 15 months ago, I took a snapshot of the key metrics that I knew we should care about. The snapshot became the baseline of our starting position. Where are we going?:  From the starting position I set about dreaming about a bold ambition which I shared with the team, of where we were taking the business, how we were going to measure ourselves and how we were going to get there. Most importantly I shared WHY we were going there in the first place and what it would mean for our customers, our business and our team. Review: Where are we now?: 7 months in I took another snapshot of the exact same metrics & reviewed the metric with the team. All were green, all were trending & moving in the right direction. HOWEVER - never be satisfied with good, when you know the what the true potential of your opportunity, so… Where are we going: More Dreaming… So I reviewed the metrics with my leadership team, we made some adjustments, we re-calibrated and carried on moving forward in the direction of our bold ambition. It is an iterative, evolving and ever changing process of dreaming, assessing & reviewing to ensure you are moving toward your goals and ambitions. The same can be applied in life and it’s something I do regularly to ensure I am on track for where I want to be in 20-30yrs. I’ll share more on this next week, I am coming up on an anniversary of an important change I made that resulted in the most incredibly life changing way.
