Today’s business success story exemplifies how luxury craftsmanship and sustainability can go hand in hand 🤝 Established in Somerset in 1971, Mulberry England has grown to become the largest maker of luxury leather goods in the United Kingdom. Since its inception, sustainability has been fundamental to the Mulberry ethos. In 2021, the brand launched its Made to last Manifesto, which laid out an ambitious commitment to transform the business to a regenerative and circular model by 2030, as well as a bold commitment to reach net-zero by 2035. In addition to these commitments, the Mulberry team has been taking climate action with Ecologi to further engage and educate their employees on their sustainability journey. So far they have… 🌳 Funded the planting of 1,300 trees ⚡️ Funded over 500 tonnes of CO2e avoidance Rosie Wollacott Phillips, Head of Sustainability at Mulberry, noted that “Our Made to Last Manifesto lays out our ambitious commitment to transform the business to a regenerative and circular model, and to become net-zero by 2035... This evening we present more inspiring stories - and these two films - courtesy of Red de Acción Por Los Derechos Ambientales (RADA) and Alianza Global Para Alternativos a la Incineración (GAIA LAC). Hacía Basura Cero en Campos Deportivos: This documentary deals with the Zero Waste project carried out RADA in the Campos Deportivos sector in Temuco, Chile. This exhibition recounts the experience by the residents upon learning the principles of Zero Waste and thus reducing the amount of garbage produced. This project lasted 2 years during which the neighboring areas also learned to separate and reuse their waste to generate the least amount of garbage. Watch the documentary here: https://lnkd.in/gaKRNUiS Hacía Basura Cero en Campos Deportivos: This second documentary narrates Zero Waste initiative led by RADA at the community level from 2017 to 2018 in Campos Deportivos de Temuco in Chile. With active participation from over fifty families, the project was successful and encouraged practices like home composting and segregating recyclables, leading to a remarkable 70 to 80% reduction in waste taken out for disposal via garbage trucks. RADA's approach, involving differentiated door-to-door collection of recyclables and compostables, along with treatment in a composting plant, significantly cut final disposal by over 70%. This not only lessens environmental, social, and economic costs but also generates environmental and social benefits, fostering hope for present and future generations. Green Deal & Decathlon Belgium: Promoting Biodiversity Biodiversity is becoming an increasingly important focus in our sustainability strategies. At Decathlon Belgium, we're proud to be part of a working group with colleagues from Spain, India, and Belgium, pioneering efforts to enhance biodiversity at our sites. This year, we’re investing €15,000 per site in Maasmechelen, Namur, and Mons to explore the first steps in lowering our biodiversity impact, locally. Thanks to the Green Deal, we will share our knowledge with other partners, learn new insights, and expand our network. This collaboration involves eighty companies, developers, local governments, and schools, all participating in the Green Deal for Nature-Inclusive Parking Lots. Their shared ambition is to transform traditional parking lots into areas that boost biodiversity. Over the next three years, participants will engage in a learning network of webinars, info days, and 'Communities of Practice' to tackle challenges and share inspiration. The #GlobalFashionSummit: Copenhagen Edition 2024 that was held last week highlighted cutting-edge sustainability challenges within the fashion industry, including: the 'Enabling Efficiency and Sustainability Through Traceability' panel, which underscored how robust traceability standards can significantly boost brands' sustainability commitments; Material Production: where experts explored the importance of strong brand-producer connections, long-term commitments, and the intricacies of scaling responsible material production; The Art of Slow Luxury discussion that emphasized the importance of natural materials, regenerative sourcing, and preserving traditional tailoring techniques, and more. Our Regenerative Fund for Nature supported project in the southern Patagonia region of Argentina on #Regenerative + #WildlifeFriendly wool production practices is transforming grazing management and enhancing coexistence with wildlife - AND providing the fashion industry with Certified Wildlife Friendly® merino wool and mohair. Sheep farmers in the region are integrating regenerative agricultural practices with Wildlife Friendly® production standards. This is also providing economic incentives to the sheep farmers and wool producers as they are now accessing premium markets from fashion brands buying Wildlife Friendly® Wool. One such brand is MAYDI - a slow luxury fashion brand integrating the importance of natural materials (mohair and merino wool) and preserving traditional tailoring techniques by handcrafting its products. By collecting these flip-flops, they not only clean up the environment but also repurpose them into something stylish and sustainable. Traveling around Germany this week, promoting Ecotan Leather and Olivenleder® with Thomas M. Lamparter. A pleasure doing so by traveling comfortably seated in the Olivenleder seats of the new Škoda Auto #Enyaq electric model. Using sustainable leather in EV is THE sustainable choice that consumers like. I hear of a luxury car company giving customers the option of a vegan car. Apparently 1% of customers choose this option. Insightful commentary. I’m internally torn on the subject of alternative leather solutions vs. using all animal carnage waste left over from the food industry. Although, I deeply admire Stella McCartney and the companies values, I agree with a concerned leather professional (insightful commenter) on how we should not blame the leather industry for 18% of greenhouse emissions when the demand for beef is unarguably higher than the demand for authentic leather goods. Leather lasts longer than the food on our plates. A simple google search for demand vs supply in the world of leather and beef enlightens us that there is an expensive and necessary demand for both.
