Another day, another restaurant tech acquisition, and a big one (actually, two). American Express is buying Tock from Squarespace for $400M. It's also buying contactless payment/ordering provider Rooam. There are a few angles to this. ➡ Amex now owns both Resy and Tock, solidifying it as a major reservations source at a time when reservations are hot. ➡ Amex cardholders get special access to popular restaurants. ➡ Restaurants get access to those diners. ➡ Amex gets more data on people's dining habits. ➡ Amex becomes a bigger supplier of tech to restaurants. Not just reservations, but also easy ordering, payment and a bunch of POS integrations through Rooam. Lots of synergies here, but the big winner may be Amex cardholders.
