40dB Poll | What do we think of the national team? Spain celebrates multiculturalism and adores Lamine Yamal | Euro 2024 Germany The Euro Cup that Spain has had has been so, so good that this Sunday almost nine out of ten Spaniards – 87% – will sit in front of the television to watch the final against England (21.00, La1), according to a survey by the 40dB Institute for EL PAÍS and Cadena SER. The match has become a historic event that has aroused majority social support among men and women after the team sealed a formidable path – six victories in six games with an attractive and brave proposal – until the final clash this Sunday with which it has hooked the country again. An example: 89.9% of people have felt joy, pride, excitement or euphoria for the performance of the Roja. Another: eight out of ten Spaniards believe that the multiculturalism of society has made the team led by Luis de la Fuente better. It is telling that the two favourite players of the fans are Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, the two starting wingers, two dark-skinned young men – one is still a teenager who turned 17 on Saturday – whose families emigrated to Spain in search of a better future. The fact that there are two starting players in the national team who are children of immigrants – which also happens in other national teams – is only a reflection of Spanish society: more than 5.5 million foreigners live in the country, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The connection that La Roja has created is also evident in other data from the survey. 76.4% of Spaniards say they identify with the team, and 71.3% say that the game and its successes have helped unite us as a country. This is part of the power of football, a sport that sometimes becomes a unifying element that transcends ideologies and social classes. ❓ Question: What does inclusion "look like" to you? ❓ Recent events at the Olympics and in UK have got me thinking about what inclusion really means and "looks like" 👀 . In my world and yours, it is a word banded about everyday in most things we do. For me the Refugee Olympic Team symbolises everything that is great about inclusion 💪 . A group of athletes dispossessed and without a country to formally call home, let alone a country to compete for. The Olympics have created the opportunity for these athletes to compete and we are all seeing the benefit. Cindy Ngamba 🥇 is a great example of the what inclusion and creating a sense of belonging can achieve 👏 . She has lived in the UK since the age of 11 and due to her immigration paperwork being lost she cannot claim UK citizenship. At the age of 18 she came out as gay 🌈 and does not want to return to Cameroon where homosexuality is illegal 😠 . However, putting all of this aside, she trains with GB Boxing and has won British National Amateur Championships in three different weight categories. She has been given an opportunity to compete, and wow, can she compete! ❓ As HR professionals what obstacles can we remove to create opportunities for people to flourish? ❓ How can we create a sense of belonging to drive the inclusion that we so often talk about, especially for those in the most adverse situations? ❓ What can we do in our sphere of influence to make things better for others that in turn make our businesses and maybe in the world a better place? 😠 I think this is even more important to consider against the backdrop of violence and hate that has reared its ugly head in the UK over the past week #notinmyname #inclusion #refugeeolympicteam #proudhr

⚽️Although I am not particularly a follower of Football games, I did watch the 🇪🇸Spain - France 🇫🇷match yesterday and of course I was happy that my country won. Howe er, I couldn't help but reflect on a few things, since one remains a full time interculturalist and passionate about #diversity. Some of the most remarkable footballers in the Spanish national team today, such as Ansu Fati (born in Guinea-Bissau), Adama Traoré (of Malian descent), Eric García (with roots in Catalonia and Argentina), and of course the Star of yesterdays Match Lamine Yamal (of Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean descent), come from migrant backgrounds. This shows the strength of a #multicultural #society and reminds us of the immense #value diversity brings to all aspects of life, including sports. However, since we continue to hear critiques against multiculturalism, it’s important to recognize that these critiques often stem from a deeper issue: socio-economic disparity. Racism and xenophobia are frequently directed not just at migrants, but particularly at those from less privileged backgrounds. 🕉️ The triumphs of Ansu Fati, Adama Traoré, Eric García, and Lamine Yamal highlight the potential that can be unlocked when we support and #embrace diverse communities, rather than marginalize them. When someone’s national identity changes based on their actions (especially in high-stakes contexts like sports) this is called “selective national identity”. When a player with a migration background performs well or brings honor to the group, they are fully embraced as “one of them”. Conversely, if they perform poorly, their belonging is questioned or diminished. We see this happen constantly in the current EU football cup, people with a migrant background being valued for their success and marginalized for their failures. When are these double standards going to stop? And when do we start embracing migration as a real opportunity for our countries, organizations and teams? Let’s be honest, there would be no “The England Team, “The Netherlands Team, “The French Team” without migration.

I will rather move to Singapore or HongKong - easier money, and a relatively stable path to making to the national teams! There is more to this transition, as captured in this fact packed narrative around shifting notions of nationality in International Sports. News Flash! 2024 Paris Olympics: A South African sprinter, a Russian gymnast, and an American swimmer have switched teams - they’re waving the Australian flag! Data shows that more athletes are playing for countries different from their own and switching teams. Some have dual citizenship, while others change citizenship entirely. This trend, coined as 'brawn drain' or 'muscle drain,' raises questions about national identity… Can those who switch teams be considered as true members of their new nationality? What motivates these star athletes to trade their citizenship for a new one? What's in it for the countries rolling out the welcome mat? And how does sporting prowess factor into the criteria for switching nationalities? Lace up your cleats, don your jerseys, and tighten your racket strings. In this module, explore what these shifts signify about the evolving concepts of citizenship, national identity, and migration in the globalized world of sports. The Changing Face of National Soccer Teams in Europe and North America Many countries in Europe are now multicultural, and their soccer teams reflect this diversity with players from all ethnic backgrounds. Twenty or thirty years ago, most teams in Europe, Canada, and the United States were predominantly white. However, there has been a significant shift, with many African players who have settled and naturalized in these regions now making up a considerable portion of the national teams. Critics argue that this is a policy of allowing the best players a country can produce to represent the national team. However, I believe that national teams should reflect the ethnic makeup of the country. Seeing ten players of African descent representing France seems strange to many people, myself included, because France is not a predominantly black country. The same goes for Belgium and other nations. The Canadian team also shows a similar imbalance in ethnic representation. In the past, black players were often excluded from national teams due to racism. Now, it seems the situation has reversed, regardless of how much it is defended. Nike is doing it again with another powerful, encouraging and "goosebumps" moment for the sports community. In the name of power of sport to move the world forward, Nike and Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF) partnered up to help displaced athletes find community and a sense of belonging through sport. This collaboration will help supporting a greater cause of destroying the myth that refugee athletes don't deserve to perform at Olympic stage. We say that they work same hard and perform on the highest level as any other Olympian. We say that sport is much more than an activity. We say you can't stop sport. This an opportunity to bring belonging, confidence and overall mental health, particularly for women and girls, through ORF's Terrains d’Avenir program in Paris. As Vanessa Garcia-Brito says on our Nike news channel: “Globally, girls face complex cultural and social barriers and, as a result, are moving the least. Girls enter sport later and drop out earlier — at twice the rate of boys. Our support of the Olympic Refuge Foundation aims to change that for displaced girls.
