Our London team (Sam, Jacob and Philippe) was on the EO scene last week, attending the first-ever EO Summit. Organised by Aravind Ravichandran from TerraWatch Space, its goal was to focus on users instead of providers and on applications instead of the tech itself. 🗣️ It was great to see examples of the next generation of EO tech. We saw some cool LLM demos (we’re working on this as well!) that showed how you can do geospatial analysis using natural language. 🛰️ A key topic discussed was around satellite constellations which provide daily updated imagery globally to detect changes such as floods or deforestation or industrial or crop monitoring. 🌧️ Insurance was another focus area. There were several companies working on parametric insurance - a set payout based on a trigger event, such as a natural disaster of a specified intensity. It was great to connect with our peers from Planet, Element 84, LiveEO, OroraTech, Spire, Pixxel, Maxar Technologies, Sust Global and other EO companies. Huge kudos Aravind - we look forward to the next one!

Happy to have reunited with so many people from the industry to advocate for the idea of having a national address database project in Brazil. Ivone Batista (Director of Geosciences at IBGE), Rogério Borba, coordinator of INDE, Daniela Marques, General Coordinator of the Secretariat of Digital Government, Ernesto Batista from the Secretariat of Digital Government, Luciana Santos from GeoSampa, Eduardo Francisco, Big Data Professor at FGV, Anderson Medeiros ClickGeo CEO. It is interesting to see the success of the fair. Emerson Granemann, CEO, (top right on picture), had the vision to create a business model that brings together complementary and synergistic worlds in one place. It started with MundoGeo, which I have visited annually since 2004. In 2015, he added the DRONEShow to the event, the success of which led to the creation of SpaceBr and eVTOL (electric flying vehicles). The result is an event with multiple formats, including fair, technical courses, specialized lectures, and debates on major governance issues important to the country and the continent. Emerson sold the company’s control to the Italian Exhibition Group in 2023, and I have no doubt that this winning business model will be utilized by this leading fair organizing group in Europe. Business is like data. In the vast expanse of the ocean, understanding its intricate dynamics has long been a challenge. But this challenge can be mitigated by using the collective power of everyday citizens. The EU-funded Iliad project, aiming to create digital replicas of our oceans, known as Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs), is using citizen science in its Jellyfish Swarm Forecast pilot project, which is led by partner organisation the University of Haifa. Under the guidance of Dr Dori Edelist, along with colleagues Prof. Dror Angel and Emily Robertson from the University of Haifa and in collaboration with Hidromod, this pilot project endeavours to create a forecast for jellyfish swarms using data contributed by citizens.
