Big news from VIDA! 🌿 We’ve just rolled out two top-tier datasets: Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT)'s Key Biodiversity Areas and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. These datasets are game-changers for identifying and managing biodiversity risks in line with the EU Taxonomy (specifically Annex D) and the Habitats Directive! 🌍🌱

💡🌱 How can integrating #KBAs into #NBSAPs help to deliver the GBF? The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was finalised in December 2022. Countries must now re-align their existing National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to reflect the mission, four goals and 23 targets of the GBF.  Conserving Key Biodiversity Areas is central to delivering the GBF’s overall ‘nature positive’ mission to take urgent action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. KBAs are useful for guiding countries in three main areas of the GBF:  𝗮. Identification of sites of importance for biodiversity to guide expansion of protected and conserved areas to 30% by 2030; 𝗯. Identification of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs); and  𝗰. National spatial planning. Discover more about how KBAs can be useful for NBSAPs 🌐

Towards the Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and a KBA System for Somaliland.

It’s International Day for Biological Diversity! The Day celebrates the validation and ratification of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) created in 1992. This year’s theme is to be “Part of the Plan” to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting and implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). As zoos and aquariums have expertise and a vast knowledge of species and their care, they are ideally placed to participate and contribute to support conservation efforts aiming to reduce and reverse biodiversity loss. The GBF consists of four goals and 23 targets, of which target 4 directly calls to action the ex situ community, providing both guidance and opportunities for organisations such as zoos and aquariums to quantify their contributions to biodiversity conservation. WAZA continually strives to align itself with the GBF, and encourages its members to do the same, both within the context of target 4 and other broader targets. Session E – Call for abstracts of Examples linked to the development and use of applied evidence for biodiversity conservation and management. The Convention on Biological Diversity’s Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) underpins global action for conservation. To meet the international targets set there will be a need for clear evidence on the nature, extent and location of human impacts on species and VMEs, understanding on the structure, function and resilience of species and ecosystems, and to define thresholds for impacts. 🌍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗔𝗭𝗔𝟮𝟭+ 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲! 🎈Between 2021 and 2023, EAZA has been exploring international frameworks and policies concerning biodiversity conservation in its internal EAZA21+ Campaign. The campaign has now come to an end, producing its final product: the EAZA21+ Toolkit. The Toolkit consists of 21 questions and answers to: 🤓 enhance your knowledge ✨ draw inspiration for your institution’s strategies 🤝 get guidance for making a stronger impact in biodiversity conservation 📝Some of the frameworks discussed are the 𝗘𝗨 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 and the 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 (𝗚𝗕𝗙). These documents provide useful directions for all conservation actors, and collaboration between them. EAZA recognizes that modern zoos and aquariums play an important role in these future plans for nature.
