A new open-access ‘aging atlas’ provides a detailed map of how cells and tissues age. In a truly #crossdisciplinary work, we have successfully applied a well-established concept in #Thermodynamics to a #cardiovascular problem and have developed a novel index to help with a common heart disease. In the paper published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, led by Amin Deyranlou, we have conducted ‘#exergy’ analysis on the heart to assess its functionality and ageing, for patients suffering from #AtrialFibrillation (AF). AF is one of the most common heart problems and it results in irregular heartbeats. In this work, we have developed a new metric called ‘exergy age index’ which quantifies how exergy destruction affects heart functionality and ageing. We hope such cross-disciplinary approaches can be utilised in the future to develop new techniques to address some of the challenges we are facing in healthcare and other disciplines.
