As part of our research project with Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands in collaboration with USU’s Janet Quinney Lawson Institute for Land, Water, and Air I presented this poster at the 2024 Utah State University Spring Run Off Conference. Our project is ongoing so this is more of an update on where we are at before diving into more field work in the very near future. I could have easily done one poster for each objective in the project but I did my best to squeeze as much as I could into this space. Establishing baseline conditions and post-restoration standardized monitoring is critical to assessing the impact of restoration. In preparation for a planned culvert removal to reconnect upstream migration for cutthroat trout in North Eden Creek, a tributary of Bear Lake, we are characterizing the current fish community and habitat conditions, and designing a monitoring plan capable of determining long-term success of restoration.

Congrats on publishing this amazing paper which addresses the increasing (or not) diversity in the forest and forest products sector. Could indoor vertical farming transform forestry and help the UK meet net zero targets faster? In trials with Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS), some broadleaf tree seedlings are being grown to marketable size six times faster than traditional outdoor sowing. In these trials, the first of their kind in the UK, we have enabled seedlings to grow to 40-50cm tall in just 90 days – in a field, that could take up to 18 months. Both conifers and broadleaf trees have been grown successfully. The trials also show environmental benefits: vertical farming uses far less water. Additionally, fewer seeds are wasted because the controlled steady state of a vertical farm minimises those external factors which can impede germination. As climate change throws new challenges at our forests, surely innovation has to be the answer. #NationalTreeWeek
