Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, may develop its first Indian data facility. Insiders said Meta may locate its data hub near Reliance Industries' Chennai campus. After talking at Anant Ambani's pre-wedding festivities in Jamnagar in early March, Meta and RIL partnered. Faster local user-generated content processing will boost Meta's main apps. Meta's Singapore data centre handles Indian user data. Local data centres in India will enhance content delivery and user experience by enabling localised advertisements and reducing transmission costs from global data centres. The Brookfield Asset Management, Reliance Industries, and Digital Realty joint venture MAA10 facility in Chennai's Ambattur Industrial Estate will house the data centre. This campus's 100-MW IT load may sustain Meta's activities. Meta's strategic cooperation with Reliance Industries highlights India's growing relevance to digital companies. Late to post my 2023 highlight but it's never too late to share exciting stuff! I had an amazing time speaking at Meta's EMEA wide agency connect festival where we discussed utilizing WhatsApp for Business to drive brand growth. It was an honor to be part of this amazing festival that touched 130+ media and digital agencies. 🚀 We covered everything from Meta's ad & creative strategy to testing tactics and essential tips for advertisers. 💡 My top three tips for advertisers out there? 1️⃣ Start thinking of how you can make your customers' lives easier and how popular media channels like WhatsApp can help connect with your customers better. 2️⃣ Embrace a data-driven culture and continuous experimentation with AB testing in place and take actions based on your findings. 3️⃣ Finally, invest time in creating engaging content and experiment with diverse creative concepts because Meta is a creative-hungry platform. ByteDance is known to be a very data-driven company that engineers the “factors of production”, including employees and systems, to maximise efficiency. Such shakeoffs and restructurings in its China operations happen fairly frequently (e.g. they shut their entire gaming businesses at the end of last year). How much this culture can be adapted effectively into an Indonesian work environment is interesting to observe.

What an interesting set of numbers from Meta, and we aren’t just talking about the 22% reduction in workforce year over year. It’s a strong financial performance, and while it’s not new news that Chinese brands spend money on Facebook and IG advertising, some people may still be surprised by the size of the contribution from China, considering Meta platforms are blocked there, and all the general negative coverage of the economy. For those of us well acquainted with brands and manufacturing in China, it’s less of a surprise. Domestic demand and consumption is weak, so sales and any hope of growth, has to come from overseas customer acquisition. While companies such as SHEIN and Temu Inc grab the headlines, it’s the very long tail of manufacturers of barely branded products, ranging from electric scooters to air conditioning units to throwaway fashion, that will continue to provide growth for Meta and every other platform that makes it easy for them to target global customers through a China interface. The reseller business is growing and not all of it is particularly sophisticated or accountable. But what it is, is a very easy way for Chinese companies to spend a lot of money advertising on global platforms without having to worry about how they get their cash out of China. The lack of transparency and competitiveness of pricing or outcomes is a worthwhile trade off for manufacturers with excess stock, and no one in their domestic market to buy it.
