Exciting news from the White House yesterday! Joe Biden announced the first ever White House initiative on Women's Health Research. Led by First Lady Jill Biden and the White House Gender Policy Council, the initiative aims to transform the approach to women's health: 💜 It will address the historic underrepresentation and underfunding that women's health receives. This will bridge crucial research gaps and allow for better treatment for conditions effecting women. 💜It will focus on priority issues (menopause, Alzheimer's, endometriosis, etc.). The goal is to provide tools and information for preventing, diagnosing and treating various women-specific health issues. 💜 They will deliver their first set of recommendations within 45 days on how to have the most impact in advancing women's health research. This is an issue that deserves attention: the disparities between women's health and men's health have become more pronounced with the rise of AI. Collecting more data on women, and investing in this research will be groundbreaking and lifechanging for women globally. 👇👇👇 See the link below for more info!

I loved this quick read, "Imagine If Women’s Health Had The Resources It Deserves” by Anita Zaidi. It offers a positive and hopeful perspective on the progress being made. THE BAD NEWS… 👎Women’s health has been neglected globally including the lack of research and effective treatments, coupled with poor care delivery. 👎Medical research and funding have revolved around male physiology, despite clear sex and gender differences in health and disease and largely ignored conditions that specifically affect women, like endometriosis and menopause. 👎This neglect has driven gender disparities in health outcomes. THE GOOD NEWS… There is growing optimism as funders, policymakers, and researchers recognize both the need and the opportunity to revolutionize women’s health. 👍Recently, building on the launch of First Lady Jill Biden’s White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, President Joe Biden signed an executive order that expands, prioritizes, and provides new funding to women’s health across U.S. federal research agencies. 👍The U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office committed new funding to improve women's health worldwide. 👍A World Economic Forum initiative, the Global Alliance for Women’s Health, brings numerous organizations together to garner new resources, funding, and attention to women’s health. 👍Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation partnered with The National Institutes of Health to develop the Women’s Health Innovation Opportunity Map, highlighting 50 high-return opportunities to advance women’s health research. Decisionmakers are finally paying attention and need our collective voices to implement change. “The future health of millions of women and girls depend on it.” https://lnkd.in/gTEtYQDf #WomensHealth #WomensHealthAccess #HealthcareInnovation #WHAMnow #WomensHealthResearch

The Women’s Health Gap “Science is one of the main contributors to this health gap because of this persistent lack of appreciation for sex-based differences. For too long, science has thought of women as small men.” Lucy Perez This discussion covers many topics and we agree with Kweilin Ellingrud “ I would love to see that gap completely disappear and for women to be in better health for a longer period and to have the confidence to advocate for themselves and be able to share when they do have health challenges. I would love for women to be taken seriously and to get the adequate care that they need.” #womenshealthmatters #womenshealth #patientcare https://lnkd.in/ejwqgf-P

Today marks a monumental step forward for #women's #health on a global scale. President Biden has signed a historic executive order, dedicating $200 million to address the underrepresentation of women in health research. Specifically honing in on gaps in #menopausal #midlife conditions, including arthritis, heart attack, and osteoporosis. This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Biden administration, which proposes a remarkable $12 billion in new funding dedicated to women's health research. Described as "the most comprehensive set of executive actions ever taken to expand and improve research on women's health," this ambitious plan reflects a commitment to closing the gaps in healthcare access and outcomes for women. As we celebrate this historic achievement, let us continue to champion the cause of women's health and work towards a future where all individuals have access to high-quality, #equitable #healthcare. https://lnkd.in/gzKaQKsY

Reflecting on the profound insights from McKinsey & Company's podcast with Kweilin Ellingrud, Lucy Perez and Roberta Fusaro discussing critical gaps in women healthcare. This #WorldHealthDay, let's take a moment to acknowledge the significant impact addressing these healthcare disparities can have on global prosperity. The economic potential of closing the health gap is staggering, with estimates suggesting a boost of $1 trillion in global GDP by 2040 and seven extra days of healthy living per woman annually. The podcast highlights the misconceptions about longevity, health outcomes and quality of life. It underscores how scientific research, or rather the lack of gender-based research, contributes to the health gap, leading to suboptimal care and outcomes for women. This is why actionable steps are crucial. Investing in inclusive healthcare not only moves us toward equality but also provides women with the foundation for healthier, more enriching lives, driving us toward an equitable future. At DP World, we've partnered Unjani Clinics to address the challenges of limited resources, ageing infrastructure, and lack of technology hindering equitable and quality access to primary healthcare in South Africa, where 80% of the population relies on public healthcare. Launched in 2010, the Unjani Clinics Network now operates across 193 clinics, delivering over 4.9 million patient engagements, with plans to expand to 600 facilities. This expansion aims to give more than 4.5 million people improved healthcare access each year. As this year's theme 'My Health, My Right' articulates, health is an invaluable asset that impacts every aspect of our lives, empowering us to live fully and embrace life's challenges with resilience. It's a precious gift that deserves our utmost attention, care and investment. Let's amplify our efforts to ensure that every individual has access to quality healthcare, paving the path for healthier communities and a thriving global economy. https://lnkd.in/dPdVxE_E

Purpose driven cardiologist, experienced industry executive Championing women's heart health across industry and academia
8th March 2024, International Women's Day A global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This year's campaign theme #InspireInclusion emphasizes the importance of education and awareness for diversity in fostering inclusion and empowering women. Whilst we celebrate the #inspireinclusion theme to promote diversity in leadership positions let us not forget that good health is the fundament of our existence. Let #inspireinclusion inspire to improve women’s health: Access to #equitablehealthcare is a fundamental human right : access to affordable, non-discriminatory health care for women remains a global problem #Globalwomenshealthburden shows: o 43% are conditions that neither affect women disproportionately nor differently eg. ischemic heart disease, tuberculosis o 47% affect women disproportionately eg. auto-immune diseases and migraine o 4% affect women differently eg. atrial fibrillation and colon cancer o 5% are women specific conditions eg. fertility related and gynecological. o 50% of the burden affects women of working age. #Womencentriccare across a life course needs a holistic approach that goes beyond sexual or reproductive health. #Educationandawareness on the most debilitating women’s health issues: 1 out of 3 women are dying of cardiovascular disease (CVD), compared to 1 out of 11 dying of breast cancer However, CVD in women remains under-studied, under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated. #educatewomen and #educatehealthcareprofessionals. CVD is up to 80% preventable #womenshealthcaregap is “The Grand Canyon” (quote Dr. Jane Delgado, USA) Women’s Health access matters #WHAMReport provides data driven evidence on how investing more in women’s health research, and improving women’s lives can have huge societal economic impacts. Closing the #WomensHealthGap has the potential to provide A $1 Trillion GDP opportunity annually to improve Lives and Economies (WEF & McKinsey Health Institute, January 2024) So, let #inspireinclusion also inspire to improve women’s health!
