Attention All Space Junkies! Today, is Space Exploration Day! We celebrate Space Exploration Day every year on July 20th. Also known as "National Moon Day," President Ronald Reagan created this holiday to commemorate the first crewed mission to the moon and moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969. Eight years after President John F. Kennedy set a goal for America to land on the moon before the end of the decade, the Apollo 11 mission succeeded. The day also seeks to inspire and encourage young people to pursue careers in space sciences and space exploration. The new high-altitude view was taken by Mars Express's High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). It features many of Mars’s towering volcanoes and even includes a surprise appearance from the planet’s largest moon, Phobos. Mars Express arrived at Mars in late 2003, and completed its 25 000th orbit on 19 October 2023. In the two decades since its arrival, the orbiter has completely transformed our understanding of the planet. It’s mapped the atmosphere more completely than ever before, traced the history of water across Mars's surface, studied the two small martian moons in unprecedented detail, and returned breathtaking views of the planet in three dimensions. This new image is no exception. It focuses on the Tharsis region, which covers about one-quarter of the planet’s surface and is home to Mars’s famously colossal volcanoes. Many volcanoes can be seen here: Olympus, Arsia, Pavonis and Ascraeus Mons, and Jovis, Biblis and Ulysses Tholus. Olympus Mons is the largest, reaching nearly 22 km high (compared to Mount Everest’s 8.8 km here on Earth). #ESA #HRSC #MarsExpress

A new spacecraft from the United States is trying to land on the moon, and it's called "Peregrine." This is a big deal because it's the first time a private American aerospace company is leading a mission to the moon. The rocket carrying Peregrine, called "Vulcan," was launched from Florida early in the morning. The company behind the rocket, United Launch Alliance (ULA), said everything looks great after liftoff. The goal is for Peregrine to land on the moon around February 23. If successful, it will be the first time a US spacecraft softly lands on the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972. Peregrine's mission is to collect information about the moon's surface, which will be helpful for future human missions to the moon. Both the United States and the Soviet Union have landed a spacecraft on Mars. Has anyone else? Just a few years back, the China National Space Administration's (CNSA) Tianwen-1 mission successfully landed and operated a rover on Mars. 🔍 Launched on July 23, 2020, and reaching Martian orbit on February 10, 2021, this mission marks China as the third nation to land on Mars but just the second to deploy a rover, Zhurong. 🚀 Tianwen-1, meaning "Heavenly Questions," includes an orbiter, lander, and rover, making it the first to achieve orbiting, landing, and roving on Mars in one mission. With 14 scientific instruments on board, the mission has several extensive scientific goals: 1. Investigate Martian surface geology and internal structure 🪨 2. Search for signs of water, both past and present 💧 3. Characterize the space environment and Martian atmosphere 🌠 All in all, three countries have successfully landed on Mars, with several more on the horizon soon! #AdAstra

Designing orbital maneuvers for space exploration. In this paper, we present a new technique to transfer a spacecraft (e.g. from the Earth to the Moon) and perform gravity assist maneuvers (e.g. a swing-by with the Moon) to increase its speed to visit other bodies in the Solar System. The technique is based on the Theory of Functional Connections.
