The Future of Home Cleaning: Embracing Automation Inspired by Historical Visions As Emma Beddington explores in her compelling piece on The Guardian, visionary thinkers throughout history have often predicted the future with fascinating accuracy and creativity. From Leonardo da Vinci’s conceptual fridges to Joseph Glanvill’s foresight into communication via magnetic waves, it’s clear that the future has always been a canvas for the imaginative. But what about the more mundane aspects of everyday life, like home cleaning? The concept of self-cleaning homes isn't entirely new. Visionaries from the past, including the ingenious Frances Gabe who in the 1980s turned her Oregon bungalow into a self-cleaning house, had already paved the way. However, today’s technological advancements could take these ideas much further. Imagine a future where homes are not just self-cleaning, but are also capable of self-maintenance. Robots, already a part of our daily lives, could advance beyond simple vacuuming tasks to more complex duties like window cleaning, mould remediation, and even biohazard cleanup. Smart homes could use sensors to detect dirt and debris, deploying cleaning bots only when necessary, thus optimising energy use and ensuring a spotless environment. This vision aligns closely with historical futurist predictions which often combined both practicality and fantastical elements to suggest a future where technology seamlessly integrates into every aspect of our daily lives. For example, the Year 2000 images envisioned by Jean-Marc Côté depicted underwater hippo riding and whale-drawn buses, highlighting a creative leap in transport that parallels what we could achieve in home management. For the cleaning industry, this could represent a transformative shift. Cleaning companies, like BD365 Clean Ltd, renowned for their excellence in various domains including film, TV production, and commercial cleaning, could evolve into facilitators of these smart cleaning technologies. Not only could this enhance operational efficiencies, but it could also open up new business models centred around smart home integration, maintenance, and even data-driven cleanliness analytics. As we look forward to these developments, it’s essential to consider both the benefits and the challenges they may pose. Will automation in home cleaning render traditional methods obsolete, or will it create new opportunities for businesses and professionals in the industry? The journey from past predictions to future realities is often unpredictable, as history has shown us. However, by looking back at these creative historical forecasts, we can find inspiration and insight into how we might shape our own futures. Q1 already feels like long time ago - but today we announced our first quarter earnings for 2024 through our holding company GLX Holding AS. Glamox. 💚💡 During the Q1, we delivered a steady performance marked by sales growth and investment in initiatives to improve operational performance and cost efficiencies.    Revenue grew 1.3% to NOK 1,056 million (1,042) with our order intake stable at NOK 1,096 million (1,094). Compared to the first quarter last year, revenue was impacted by the timing of Easter. This also impacted our adjusted EBITA along with general inflation.   We continue to make progress in executing our Green Light Strategic Plan to support growth initiatives, and did a notable step-up in investments in plant automation and new digital systems and tools. We anticipate these and cost-improvement measures in place will bear fruit in the latter half of the year. Also happy in Q1 to welcome Terje Løken. our new Chief Digital Officer, supporting our aspiration to accelerate digital and Light Management Systems.   The light market, we see a continued demand for our energy-efficient LED luminaires, and increasingly for our connected lighting and systems to manage them, both in our Professional Building Solutions and Marine, Offshore & Wind divisions.  Well done team! 💚   Big THANK YOU to our customers, partners, and our Glamox employees for their support and hard work!
