The Racquet Sports industry is one which is experiencing an influx of participation like we have never seen before. Tennis has experienced a 33% rise since 2020 and pickleball has seen growth of 59%. Completing this trio is what is now widely considered the fastest growing sport in the world. Padel's meteoric rise now see's them firmly placed at the top table and with over 25 million players worldwide. There are currently 40,000 Padel courts worldwide, in the next 3 years this is expected to reach 85,000. The growth across the industry is why now is the perfect time to try and support this industry. The racquet sports industry is a $9 billion dollar industry, and the club sector plays a crucial part of it. Without facilities and locations to play, there would quite simply not be an industry. Olympic fever is going to dominate the USA for the next decade if Salt Lake City clinches the 2034 Winter Olympic bid. With LA 2028 looming large after Paris 2024 takes it bows next month, I'm predicting a significant uptick in sport-focused licensing for the next 10 years. During the last US Olympics, in Salt Lake City, there were $4.8 billion in sales recorded. This was an economic boom for Utah, increasing skiing and snowboarding revenue by 67% in the following 10 years. The Olympics are big money for the cities that can handle them. 2024 is already here, which means that within a couple of months we are about to witness the Summer Olympic Games, arguably the biggest and the most important sporting event in the world. Being by definition and indeed a mega sporting event, Olympics impact multiple areas and stakeholders - also those that are away from the action happening on the track or on the pitch. In the upcoming months prior to the Games in Paris, in a series of short articles I’ll try to elaborate on impacts and legacies that Olympic Games leave - each post will concern a particular area that is affected by this event. In each occasion, I will try to recall some more and less (if we have any of these) positive examples of Olympic legacy as theory can be remembered the best while few examples are presented. Areas that I will talk about include: ▶️ Nation and host city branding ▶️ Tourism ▶️ Sports participation and popularity ▶️ Sports facilities ▶️ Urban development ▶️ Social benefits Obviously they are all interconnected, however I think that it is worth having a closer look at each of these - it will be done on a monthly basis, starting from February to finish in July, right before the arrival of an Olympic flame to Paris. Brisbane Olympics Review- Golden Seats The 60 day review into Brisbane and SEQ Olympics stadiums has been completed. In brief it costs more than the previous Gabba option. It recommends all the other stadiums be built except the $80m Toowoomba Sports Stadium. The cost per seat at the larger stadiums is interesting. No indirect infrastructure costs were investigated. The provisional total cost is $8.1Billion for Brisbane Olympics Stadiums. But the state government still has to maintain and then demolish the Gabba at an unknown cost in the preferred model. To upgrade the Gabba to acceptable standards costs at least an extra $1Billion. That’s Gold The Gabba alternative stadium (anticipated) cost increases to $3.4Billion with the same 50,000 seats. Each seat costs $68,000. It will be the second most expensive stadium on the planet and have the lowest seating capacity of the top ten most expensive stadiums. The cost per seat will be double the third most costly stadium on the planet. The Swimming Stadium is initially forecast to cost $2.5B, it has 17,000 seats. Each seat is expected to cost $147,059. The most expensive seats of any stadium on the planet. See wiki link below. The 2032 Olympics are an expensive geographically concentrated infrastructure strategy that will impact Queensland regions differently.
