What a view! This stunning new lookout at the Twelve Apostles is complete and ready to welcome the millions who visit each year. With wide paths, cantilevered viewing areas and a boardwalk looking across Gibson Steps beach, it provides a safer, more accessible and more immersive experience. Featuring a ‘clapstick’ structure, the design was led by the Eastern Marr community. Touches of colour celebrate Ngayook (Sulphur Crested Cockatoo) and Ponponpoorramook (Red Tailed Black Cockatoo), primary totemic species to the Eastern Maar peoples. The lookout was delivered in partnership with the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, part of a $24.5 million investment by the Victorian Government in the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan. The master plan is improving experiences for visitors along this spectacular stretch of coastline, strengthening the local economy, and supporting employment opportunities through sustainable tourism. At the nearby Loch Ard Gorge precinct, another lookout is on the way to connect people with nature. Works started earlier this year on the ‘Blowhole’ lookout, which will bring visitors up close to the roaring waters of the Southern Ocean. These projects are supporting nature-based tourism and local businesses, contributing around 120 ongoing jobs, $12 million to the regional economy and increasing the annual visitor spend by $14 million. During my holiday trip this year, I revisited Venice, a city I first saw over a decade ago. Venice has always been bustling with tourists, but this time, the atmosphere felt different. The city seemed tense, and in many places, it had become a truly unpleasant tourist zone. It is not the same Venice it used to be. It has changed. This experience made me reflect on the nature of change and resistance to change, both in life and business. Not every change is positive or easily embraced. Some are "happy changes," where the benefits are clear, and people are motivated to follow through. But other changes, like mass layoffs or drastic shifts in a city’s identity, are met with understandable resistance. Venice, for example, is fighting to preserve its essence as the population dwindles and the city risks becoming a mere tourist attraction. This isn’t a change the Venetians can simply accept - they’re resisting, and rightfully so. They don’t want their city to become a lifeless theme park. This kind of resistance is something we often encounter in the workplace as well. Resistance to change is a natural reaction and sometimes a necessary one. Instead of silencing those who push back, we should facilitate discussions and listen to their concerns. They might offer insights that could enhance our solutions and add value to the change we’re trying to make. Perhaps if the voices of Venetians had been heard sooner, the city might have found a better balance between tourism and maintaining a livable environment where residents could continue with their lives. So, next time you encounter resistance from your team, stakeholders, clients, or colleagues, pause before you set out to challenge, eliminate, or overlook it. As for Venice, it is one of the most breathtaking and enchanting cities I’ve ever seen, and I genuinely hope it can find a way to become a place for people to live again, rather than just a commercialized tourist playground. P.S. To better understand the challenges the city faces, I recommend watching the documentary "I Love Venice" from 2013. Though it was released over a decade ago, it's still an eye-opener that captures the ongoing struggles of Venetians.

In South Downs National Park in West Sussex, England, lies a magical passage known as the Halnaker Tunnel of Trees. The story begins around 55 AD, when the Romans carved a path through the South Downs – Stane Street. This crucial artery linked London to Chichester, and its remnants still form the bed of Mill Lane, the road leading to the tunnel. Over centuries, the landscape evolved. Oak, field maple, hazel, and black bryony flourished along the banks, their branches reaching across the lane, eventually forming a verdant canopy. This natural tunnel became a haven for travellers, offering shade from the scorching sun and a mesmerizing tunnel effect. The 18th century brought a new landmark to the hilltop – Halnaker Windmill. This iconic stone structure served as a beacon for weary travellers, and a local legend emerged. They called him the "windmill whisperer," a man who could interpret the whispers of the wind through the tunnel, predicting weather patterns and offering guidance to those seeking their way. Though the windmill no longer stands, its legacy lives on in the tunnel's name. Today, the Halnaker Tunnel of Trees remains a cherished treasure, attracting photographers, walkers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Its beauty transcends seasons, transforming into a vibrant emerald haven in spring, a fiery tapestry of autumn hues, and a tranquil wonderland blanketed in winter snow. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve this natural wonder. Public footpaths now guide visitors through the tunnel, ensuring minimal impact on the delicate ecosystem. Local communities remain dedicated to safeguarding its beauty, ensuring future generations can experience the magic of this timeless passage.
