Over 100,000 people in the U.S. have sickle cell disease, and many of them may need regular blood transfusions to manage complications. 🩸 Patients with sickle cell disease can require as many as 100 units of blood each year. Sadly, frequent transfusions can cause patients to develop an immune response against donated blood that is not closely matched to theirs. Finding compatible blood types from donors can be difficult. Many of you know that I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) at a young age. UC, similar to Chron's, is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Most people with UC experience periods of symptom flare-ups followed by periods of remission without symptoms. These diseases can be debilitating and can require frequent hospital visits. Despite the fact that UC is a lifelong condition, I'm extremely lucky. Thanks to donor funded research, significant advancements have been made in treatments like biologics. As a result, my condition is extremely well managed but that's not the case for many living with inflammatory bowel disease. Thanks to the generosity of so many who have donated to Chron's & Colitis research, advancements continue to be made, advancements like those that have helped me. Now, it's my turn to give back. On June 2, 2024, I will be walking in the 2024 Gutsy Walk with team Royal Flush alongside thousands of Canadians affected by inflammatory bowel disease to raise crucial funds and awareness toward research and community programs. Today, is #RareDiseaseDay 2024, a day that is focused on raising awareness and generating change for the 300 million people worldwide living with a rare disease, their families and carers. At Neuraxpharm we help patients suffering from a range of rare diseases, but this year, we want to focus on one in particular: Cerebral Adrenoleukodystrophy - cALD. cALD is a terrible disease that causes demyelinating brain lesions which can become rapidly progressive, leading to acute neurological decline and death in three to four years and for which there is currently no pharmacological treatment available. We have produced a special film that we have made with our partners Minoryx Therapeutics, to raise awareness of this disease as it is critical that symptoms are identified as early as possible. The film features world renowned expert Prof Fanny Mochel, the Director of the Reference Center for Leukodystrophies - La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris, on the disease and the need for new treatments, and Karen Harrison, Support Services Manager of Alex The Leukodystrophy Charity (Alex TLC), who speaks movingly about the patient experience.
