Here's practical architectural tips👇 ☑️ Install overhangs, pergolas, or external louvers on windows and doors facing direct sunlight. These shading devices block harsh sun rays from entering the home, reducing solar heat gain. ☑️ Use light-colored or reflective roofing materials to deflect sunlight away from the building. This helps minimize heat absorption into the structure, keeping indoor temperatures cooler. ☑️ Incorporate materials with high thermal mass, such as concrete or brick (instead of wood), into the building design. DIALECTIC OF LAYERS [Design Process Workshop] ▪︎| RHIZOME CITY The vertical development of cities and high-rise constructions causes many problems, including traffic, increasing air pollution and reducing wind circulation. Our proposed solution is horizontal urban development. The main concept in the design of the horizontal city in this project is the shear object theory in architecture. Based on this theory, we consider the city as an independent element and all the components of the city are also independent elements that interact with each other. The juxtaposition of these components is like objects inside a bag, so that they do not flow together while pressing each other, and just as the spaces of an underground city are unpredictable for us, the objects inside this bag are also unpredictable. This project is an underground urban area inspired by the rhizome plant structure, rhizomes are a unique type of plant root that grows horizontally, distinguishing them from other types of roots. The rhizome gradually expands horizontally, creating nodes along its path from where the plant begins to grow vertically. The rhizome structure has no hierarchy. The parts are of equal importance. In a rhizomatic structure, there is no superiority between its points, allowing each element to communicate with the others. In response to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, Vietnamese architects are pioneering a fascinating approach to building design - the "breathing house." These structures go beyond aesthetics, utilizing bioclimatic principles to achieve thermal comfort and improved energy efficiency. Perforated brick facades act as natural filters, allowing for ventilation and diffused sunlight while mitigating harsh heat gain. Additionally, a central light well spans multiple floors, collecting natural light and facilitating natural convection through strategically placed skylights and balconies, promoting air circulation and heat release. NEW BUILDING OR RENOVATING? 🤔  Allow us to shed some light on the matter 💡 COST  New Building : Choosing new construction often comes at a higher cost, given the expanded scope of tasks, additional labor hours, and increased material requirements.  Renovating : Some of the features from the existing building can be left as-is, depending on how extensive the renovations are. These preserved elements can contribute to maintaining a lower renovation cost compared to many new builds. DURATION  New building : The timeline for a new construction project is typically longer because of the extensive work involved. How can we generate an interior wall that is completely based on biobased material flows, performs circularly at material and product level, and has a strong emphasis on involvement, comfort and health of the user? Many building materials and products that could qualify for a circular application face challenges in actually doing so. This is partly an organisational challenge and partly a technical one. With regard to the latter, there are concrete obstacles related to renewability and health of the material flows, manufacturing processes, joining techniques, and acoustic performance, amongst others. Within the Biobased, Inclusive & Circular (BIC) project, a modular wall component is developed that can cope with such challenges. In a co-creative Research-by-Design process with the project partners, a proof of concept emerged, based on existing innovations that obtain extra relevance in this new configuration. From 2020 to 2024, social work, activation and meeting center Pluspunt in Rotterdam redevelops a former municipal yard for people with limitations in their social functioning. Several sustainable work and meeting places are (re)built, forming a social and circular hotspot for the neighbourhood. Delft University of Technology is involved in this process, specifically aimed at circular and bio-based materialisation of non-load-bearing partition walls.
