Meet and regularly spend time with as many people as you can from different backgrounds, places, and experiences. This will make you a better lawyer. Why? Behind every problem is a person or a group of people. And there are also people behind or around every solution. So much of lawyering is about human behavior. The more types of humans you know and understand, the easier it will be for you to understand the problem and possible set of solutions from their perspective. The same problem presented to two different people might be dealt with in completely different ways, so having the ability to understand these different perspectives gives you a leg up. This also helps you propose thoughtful and tailored solutions or positions to juries, judges, investors, counter parties, and others. So many lawyers I meet tend to spend most of their professional time with other lawyers. Spending time with any one group of people can be myopic and might not give you the perspectives you need to be an effective problem solver. This also helps tremendously with business development. The more types of people you know and understand, the easier it will be for you to connect with a variety of people experiencing a variety of problems. It will also help you structure solutions in a way that will be well-received by all stakeholders. And besides, it's more fun to live life this way!

Absolutely love this and couldn’t agree more. Filling that pool of wisdom by diversifying your network is so beneficial. It’s also really rewarding and interesting! Win-win!

Agreed! Only spending time with other lawyers can create an echo chamber where it may seem like there's only one way to do something or solve a problem. A diversity of perspectives can open your mind up, get your creativity flowing, and help you be a better problem solver, whether for your clients or in running your own business!
