Config APAC 2024, you were a delight 🎉 Our design team is back from Figma's design conference in Singapore. Brimmed with inspiration and fresh Figma knowledge, here’s what they want to share on the experience and what’s happening in UI/UX: 💡 Need for Inspiration: The team learned the importance of "unplugging" to spark creativity. Stepping away from screens and observing real-world interactions and user behaviors can lead to unexpected inspiration for design solutions. 💡 Figma Updates: Exciting new features were announced, focusing on boosting productivity and streamlining workflows. The upcoming integration of AI capabilities (e.g., renaming layers) has the potential to reshape how we design. Think smarter automation that frees designers to focus more on strategic design decisions. 💡 Design Thinking: The event went beyond Figma features, with talks about design and creativity in general. Key takeaway: great design pushes boundaries and solves problems in innovative ways. 💡 Networking and industry insights: The team had the opportunity to network with designers and Figma representatives, including Yuhki, the Chief Product Officer. 💡 For the team, especially new members, the conference provided a great opportunity to bond through traveling and hanging out with colleagues. InVision, once valued at $1.8 billion during its 2018 Series F funding round in which it raised $115 million, is shutting down! 🤯 With Freehand sold off to Miro, it marks the end of an era. In my opinion, without any insider knowledge, it definitely failed to capitalize on collaboration and possibly integrations. Because retrofitting a solo product for collaboration is nearly impossible. Once collaboration becomes the main value proposition, as seen with Figma, it's essential for success in the whole category. And simply adding features like commenting and co-editing will *always* feel somewhat clunky, late to the game, and not part of the core offering. Additionally, when a product covers only part of the workflow lifecycle, smooth integrations or building partner ecosystem is crucial for adoption. Although I always appreciated InVision's integration with Jira, they failed to build ecosystem the way Figma did. Fascinating outcome. Key insight from the Figma APAC Design Leaders Meetup is that the majority of design problems are not related to the TOOLS we use, but are instead PEOPLE problems. Communication, Collaboration and Feedback between stakeholders and developers. Whilst the tools can help to some degree, skilling up your team to be better communicators, collaborators and to be able to give better quality feedback will have greater impact.

Figma Powers Seamless Collaboration with Clients  For over 20 years we have completed 1000’s of projects for education and training companies (even before the term Edtech was a thing 😂 ) and continuously adopt new software and technology when it makes sense for our clients. A big part of our work and success is effective collaboration with our clients. As longtime Adobe XD users it was hard to imagine a new platform would provide as many tools and features as Adobe has reliably provided for so many years. However, Figma’s real-time features have transformed our client workflows. For example, Figma empowers us to collaborate seamlessly with remote teams. We can share screens and edit together in real-time, allowing for rapid iterations and feedback. Figma eliminates delays and bottlenecks that would limit the speed of projects. The ability to chat and comment directly in Figma also facilitates constant communication with edtech collaborators – no more email tagging for approvals! All of us who used Invision got that email notification this week. I am grateful to Invision for helping me stick to this wonderful career. During those days when I was figuring out what I was good at, without the rise of tools like Invision and Sketch I probably would have switched to something else. However, like any consumer behavior, mine also changed and I expected more from them a few years down the road. A couple of things I add to what this person said: - As a user, it seemed that they put a lot of focus on content with their papers, research, and blogs (which were excellent) but extensive when the brand already seemed positioned, and seemed like they put more effort into that than in the product. Possibly forgetting that users after the loyalty stage will go back to the awareness stage and face the threat of new entrants. A lot of promises of new features that took a long time to release. - Their focus seemed too broad, leading to a fragmented product with each added feature, there was a lot of hype for Invision Studio as design and prototyping tool, but it was a flop. It was separate from the legacy product, and extremely slow for a designer to use, making it the wrong solution for 1+ design teams. - From a cost perspective, in the early days they also had a rep for company accounts (who were awesome btw) but were they necessary ... ? Mixed feelings about this, but they leave some valuable lessons to all of us in this industry

Lately I’ve been interested in not just what people are working on, but how they work and what tools they use to assist them in tackling big problems. I had a great time chatting with the amazing Vicky Gu about this very thing. For me, it’s the problem of transferring the energy of in-person collaborative whiteboarding to a remote environment. For her, it’s about structuring and operationalizing a GTM campaign, and strategic thinking around brand strategy. The one thing we both have in common? Figma’s Figjam. Loved this episode of Lenny's Podcast! Mihika Kapoor is a top-notch Product Manager. I'm jealous of her background: a major in Computer Science, a minor in design, experience in both, and then moving into product management to tie it all together. In the episode, she shares her 0-1 strategies in larger orgs. But the discussion also touches on the FigJam product that Mihika worked on, demonstrating the growing need for collaborative tools that go beyond traditional meetings. It's no surprise that brainstorms are among the first collaborative sessions to evolve into more productive formats, compared to meetings. Designers are often champions of design thinking, which is at the core of innovation. Mihika mentioned that at Figma, FigJam is used for a variety of functions and roles, and I can definitely see its potential for even broader use. Companies that innovate their collaboration methods and tackle blockers directly will be the ones to stay ahead. It's exciting to see how these tools are reshaping the way we work!
