Despite a higher occurrence of violent incidents involving psychiatric patients occur in healthcare settings, only about one-third of these patient safety events are actually recorded by staff in hospitals' reporting systems. Healthcare organizations are working to implement interventions to support staff, encourage incident reporting, and prevent the normalization of workplace violence. https://viz.inc/3xhrwCZ

A law meant to protect patients from spurious hospital practices may create headaches for the behavioral health industry. The No Surprises Act adds additional administrative burdens to provider organizations to take on without a corresponding funding measures. The law, in part, requires health care organizations to provide good faith estimates to patients who choose to pay cash, seek out-of-network care, or are uninsured. The law also allows patients to dispute bills that substantially exceed the estimate. Separately, it protects against bills for out-of-network providers and facilities or organizations that are otherwise in-network with a patient’s plan, especially in emergency situations. Seclusion and restraint are used when there are no other options to protect the safety of service users and staff in inpatient care settings. However, the use of these practices can potentially have harmful emotional and physical impacts on the people involved in these events, both directly and indirectly. Seclusion and restraint have a negative impact on a person’s recovery during their inpatient stay and can infringe on human rights. They harm the relationships between staff and service users, eroding the potential for therapeutic engagement. Over the past several years, community interest in building comprehensive crisis systems has risen dramatically. Some may be surprised to discover that the impact of these services has never been quantified - until now. We are excited to share the publication of a groundbreaking study led by Margie Balfour, MD, PhD, and ASU College of Health Solutions in the journal, Psychiatric Services, titled "Patient Flow and Reutilization of Crisis Services Within 30 Days in a Comprehensive Crisis System." This first-of-its-kind analysis focuses on the outcomes of a community-based crisis system and its ability to lessen the demand for costly emergency department and inpatient services. The study solidifies the case for community-based crisis systems and their transformative impact on individuals and communities. Some key findings of this analysis include: · 57.4% of individuals entered the crisis system through mobile crisis or crisis facilities versus the emergency department, indicating the crucial role these services play in crisis response. · Of the subset of individuals receiving care at the Connections Health Solutions Tucson Crisis Response Center, 63.3% did not reutilize any additional crisis or emergency services within 30 days.
