The transportation sector is a large contributor to carbon emission, and it appears particularly tricky to shift the Malaysian transportation landscape. At present, I too can't imagine not having 2 vehicles in my household of 8. While Gentari is spearheading the development of EV infrastructures, much can be done on transforming the transportation scene; from expanding public transportation coverage to land-use planning, and credit market for vehicle sales. Personally, I will continue to ride the MRT from Kajang to KLCC. It's a long journey one way, but it's probably the time to catch up on Keluar Sekejap. Source: NETR2023

ALI Talks - Alternative Energy, EV Truck Conversion Based on IESR (2023)*, transport sector contributes around 23% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia. While efforts over the past decade have made strides, they have not kept pace with the overall increase in emissions. Identifying alternatives for conventional transportation mode that use Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) is crucial for impactful emission reduction while ensuring business viability for the logistics industry. Despite growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs), new EV trucks remain prohibitively expensive for commercial viability. Retrofitting ICE trucks to battery electric vehicles (BEV) at the end of their life cycle presents a viable alternative. Our upcoming event on 6 June 2024 will be the first of our ALI Alternative Energy Series, which address various topics related to alternative energy for logistics in Indonesia every 2-3 months. The discussion is going to focus on the retrofitting implementation of BEV trucks. [Kickstarting Indonesia's Electric Vehicle Revolution] In my recent exploration of a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable transportation in Indonesia at ShARE Universitas Indonesia, With the support of Kautsar Muhammad Iqbal I've delved deep into the challenges and strategies surrounding the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). It's clear that Indonesia is on the brink of an EV revolution, but the journey is fraught with obstacles, from high costs and consumer anxiety to the impact of dirty power supplies and battery disposal. The government has set ambitious targets to transition to EVs, aiming for a significant reduction in carbon emissions. However, the current penetration of EVs in the market is minuscule, highlighting a critical gap between ambition and reality. We can bridge this gap through concerted efforts in several areas. First and foremost, suppressing the high cost of EVs is paramount. The roadmap lays out a detailed strategy for this, emphasizing the need for both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to make EVs affordable for the average Indonesian. Additionally, easing consumer anxiety through a robust charging infrastructure is crucial to encourage more people to make the switch. The energy powering our EVs also needs a massive overhaul. Currently, the majority comes from fossil fuels, diluting the environmental benefits of electric vehicles. Transitioning to renewable energy sources is not just necessary; it's urgent. Finally, addressing the environmental impact of battery disposal through better e-waste management practices is vital for a truly sustainable EV ecosystem. This journey is not just a government mandate; it requires active participation from private companies, communities, and individuals. I call on stakeholders across all sectors to come together, innovate, and drive Indonesia towards a sustainable transportation future.
