Governments in numerous localities, including the District of Columbia, are increasingly turning to algorithms to determine benefits relating to unemployment, disability, medical care, and housing, according to a report by the Center for Democracy & Technology. And the tools are often reducing and denying benefits, with some “devastating consequences,” say human rights advocates. World Vision celebrates the passage of the REPORT Act in the House of Representative. Endorsed and advocated for by World Vision, the bill will strengthen safeguards to #ProtectKidsOnline and increase the reporting of online child sexual exploitation and abuse on websites and social media platforms. “Law enforcement experts and victims advocates agree advancements in technology have led to an explosion of images depicting child sexual abuse available and distributed online," said Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA). “By making updates to the law, the REPORT Act will help law enforcement evolve with this threat.” The passage of the bill marks a significant step toward modernizing the law and ensuring children in the U.S. and around the globe are safe online. "As an organization dedicated to protecting children, we are grateful for Congress' bipartisan collaboration that helped champion the REPORT Act across the finish line," said Lisa Bos World Vision Senior Director of Government Relations. "Now passed in the House and Senate, the legislation is headed to the President's desk to be signed into law." The Brussels Times has published an article on the revision of the Victims’ Rights Directive with my contribution 👍 💪 . 📢 “What is next for the EU rules on victims’ rights?” uncovers the insights from experts on what it truly takes to pave the way forward to improve the situation of those affected by crime. I explain why the Commission has tabled the proposal for the revision of the Directive and how the proposed amendments can improve the situation of victims in the EU. Once adopted, the amendments will upgrade the minimum standards on victims’ rights to the current developments in society and technology. For example: 📌to improve victims’ right to information – Victims’ Helplines using the EU-wide 116 006 📞 linked to comprehensive websites that, thanks to new technologies, will provide access to information in several languages and to persons with disabilities. 📌 for child victims 🧒 - state-of-the-art multi-agency support, protection, and access to justice - provided in a coordinated manner and within the same premises. 📌 for all victims - more satisfactory access to compensation from the offender. Yet, before the amendments become binding rules of law, they must be agreed by the EU co-legislators. The wheels are in motion at the European Parliament, and Council but the journey ahead is not a ride in the park. The voice of civil society and victim support organisations should be taken into account in this discussion. Many thanks to the Brussels Times and all colleagues who contributed @LeventAltan from Victim Support Europe, @MirenSpek from Udruga za podršku žrtvama i svjedocima and @FridaWheldon from Brottsofferjouren Sverige 🙏 To learn more 📰: https://lnkd.in/eAnT5Der

As we learn more about the composition of the next European Parliament, here’s three key deliverables the EU institutions should work on next: 1️⃣ tools to effectively implement and enforce the Digital Services Act for children, for example, by establishing focal points on children’s rights within the mandate of Digital Services Coordinators 2️⃣ effective laws and technology to combat online child sexual abuse and exploitation for example through stronger coordination at EU level prevent, reduce and block the spread of this content 3️⃣ stronger protections for children as consumers in the Digital Fairness Fitness Check and in consumer law, for example by addressing addictive design practices. Tomorrow, November 25th, is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. We join the UN campaign for eliminate the Violence against women and girls. It remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. This scourge has intensified in different settings, including the workplace and online spaces, and has been exacerbated by post-pandemic effects, conflicts, and climate change. We need more investment in women’s organizations, better legislation, prosecution of perpetrators, more services for survivors, and training for law enforcement officials. #EdgeConsulting #EvidenceBasedDecisions #NOExcuse

https://lnkd.in/ggbnakqd '' Tackling violence against women and girls : We have made violence against women and girls a strategic policing requirement for the first time, making clear to the police that these crimes are as significant as terrorism, serious and organised crime and child sexual abuse. We have strengthened the law to punish predators with new offences for stalking, controlling or coercive behaviour, non-fatal strangulation and suffocation, sharing of intimate images or ‘revenge porn’, non-consensualtaking of images of a woman breastfeeding,‘up skirting’ and raised the maximum penalties for harassment. We will legislate to create new offences for spiking, the creation of sexualised deepfake images and taking intimate images without consent. We will support victims of domestic abuse including through our Domestic Abuse Act, which created a statutory definition of domestic abuse and gave new powers to police and the courts. We will toughen sentencing for murders that take place within the context of domestic abuse with new aggravating factors, such as if they involve coercive and controlling behaviour or gratuitous attacks. We will introduce a 25-year prison term for domestic murders, regardless of whether a weapon is used. Those who kill their domestic abusers will not face the same starting point. This will be accompanied by a review of homicide sentencing, looking to close loopholes that allow some killers to get off lightly. We will introduce an aggravating factor for murders that happen in the context of ‘rough sex’, so it is never used as an excuse to get a lighter sentence. We have increased rape prosecutions by 56% since 2010 and we will ensure rape victims get the justice and support they deserve, with a new investigatory model for rape for police forces and prosecutors and pre-recorded cross- examination for victims in all Crown courts. We will carefully consider the recommendations of Baroness Bertin’s Independent Review of Pornography and ensure we have the right safeguards in place to protect against any harmful impacts of the industry. A justice system that delivers for victims and the public We will toughen sentencing for the worst offenders. We have already ended Labour’s automatic halfway release for violent and serious sexual offenders. We will make life imprisonment without parole mandatory for more of the most heinous murderers and require rapists and other serious sexual offenders to spend the whole of their sentences behind bars.
