Men's violence against women is rooted in disrespect and negative attitudes towards women which exacerbate in male-dominated, aggression-supportive social settings, like sport. This is made even worse when alcohol is a factor (something omnipresent in Australian sport settings). The correlation between major sporting events and increases in domestic and family violence rates is widely recognised. We must not look past the public funding of a sport that glorifies men's violence, nor dismiss the actions and comments of one 'bad man' who is ultimately idolised by so many more. Violence-supportive attitudes are born out of normalising and glorifying interpersonal violence, and events like this will only sustain the conditions that perpetuate violence in our community. Sometimes the economic gains just aren't worth it. Thank you Domestic Violence NSW, Delia Donovan, and Catie McLeod for shining the light.
“It could have funded the $6m we need for the 27 women’s domestic violence court advocacy services. It could have funded the $12m we needed for specialist legal services,” she said. “We really need to be looking at our priorities. We’ve lost 35 women this year alone from domestic and family violence.” - Delia Donovan Well done Catie McLeod for covering such an important issue! You never know where inspiration will strike. This time it came from a Business Journals article about a Formula One racing community for “girls, gays, and theys.” With Two Girls 1 Formula, the organizers have created a community in a unique place. It’s a great example of an advocate model that has many applications. With this project, the founders created a following that goes beyond liking a sport and into a supportive role. This type of advocacy can help you grow your thought leadership and build your brand. I explain why in my latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/gA9JWwT3 #community #advocate #thoughtleadership

Presence of mind demonstrates personal humility and gratitude, that elevates elite athletes into realm of culturally iconic. US women sports could use a few good women. Riley Gaines is a stand out. Highly competitive & equally gifted as sharp debater, Riley has taken the Country by storm, challenging presence of transgenders in women sports. Since tying in a race against transgender Lea Thomas, her leadership on this issue is a testament to her personal integrity & value system. Will Anyone Care Enough to Rout Out US Women National Soccer Team’s Inner Demons? As the World Spins, US Women National Soccer Team gets Bounced in Early Round from World Cup ~ into oblivion, a by-product of go woke-go broke politics infesting sports world. Missing from net is a meme of Megan Rapinoe penalty kick with Rapinoe voice over from earlier tone deaf video capture of her carrying a trophy saying, ‘I deserve this, I deserve this’. When a team has all the talent and resources necessary and is projected to be a contender in final play, then loses early in tournament, it is a sign of something seriously wrong within the team itself. Rapinoe is an alpha lesbian female. Fact. She said, missing the penalty kick, was like a dark joke. Jokes on Rapinoe or worse, Rapinoe is the joke. On the world stage. On the edge of her retiring from the sport, after racking up major endorsement deals. After her being vocally all in on transgender in women sport endorsement. Will her after burn fade away faster than a dying ember, along with her endorsement deals? Teams can rebuild, given the right environment. Question is, how deep is the rift in US Women Soccer Team beyond Rapinoe? Both my sisters were elite athletes in their respective sports. One was a member of US Women National Soccer Team in the 80’s and inducted into UCLA Hall of Fame as a Pioneer in Women’s Soccer. Both advocated for Title IX compliance. The other walked away from a full Softball athletic scholarship after one year. Of the challenges she faced, one was being the only heterosexual female on team and how the dynamics of being on a lesbian dominated team had caused her undue duress. She was no shrinking violet either. She came home from college, re-aligned her athletic goals, completed her BS at a State University. She went on to play Women Pro Golf and has a successful golf career. She effectively started her golf career at 25 years of age, without the advantage of high school or collegiate competition under her belt. It is incumbent on Coaches and Sports Organizations to insure fair play and a healthy environment for girls to flourish. No different than the crackdown on Hazing in Fraternal Organizations on Collegiate Campuses. Intimidation within a team driven by sexual preferences or political agendas, should be eliminated. It is unfortunate that our once great US Women National Soccer Team has devolved into a losing team. This is a matter that should be examined closely, beyond the obvious elements.

We are #UMNMorrisProud to observe National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Feb. 7. Title IX was a public law passed in 1972 that completely changed the women’s narrative in sports. The legislation called for equal participation of everyone in all the programs and activities that were federally funded, which meant all public schools would ensure equitable sports opportunities to the students, regardless of their gender. Title IX was a breakthrough in women’s sports. Before this, only one in 27 girls had access to sports activities. But, today, that statistic has improved to two in five girls. #NGWSD #RollCougs https://lnkd.in/g8CrHDqh

Despite efforts by sports to combat it, there is sobering evidence of the persistence of racism within our spectator communities. Associate Professor of Sport Management at UTS, Daryl Adair explores this topic. Read about it at https://lnkd.in/gpZPTz9X #sports #sportsmanagement #sportsgovernance

Sports bodies, such as the AFL, Rugby Australia and Cricket Australia have a huge part to play in breaking down barriers that allow people to be who they are, openly and in safe team environments. And all could continue to do more, and some by the sounds of it more so than others. That said I firmly believe that inclusive culture also needs to be driven from the bottom up. Grassroots coaches, volunteers, supporters and parents should create environments of safety for their teams and their opponents, embracing differences and celebrating them. Yes, sport can be confrontational on a field, and binary in terms of result, but how we treat each other doesn't have to be. Safe environments, that are inclusive can be achieved in male sports, we see it in female sports, but it needs grassroots ambassadors, supported by sports bodies to achieve it. Then you can have people able to be themselves, and everybody being welcomed to sports, rather than feeling safer outside of it. Sport is for all, and it's up to all of us to make it that way. #inclusivesport #wecandobetter
Social psychologist using science to drive meaningful change to negative behaviours in workplaces, sports clubs, and schools
Hello LinkedIn Family... I hope you will tune in to watch the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) show Four Corners air its investigation by Louise Milligan tonight into the lack of action to stop pervasive homophobic behaviours and fix a harmful culture in the AFL - Australian Football League. I'll be sharing key findings from the PhD I just completed at Monash University alongside Michael O'Donnell and Jason Ball and other people bravely sharing their stories. In 2014 the AFL (and four other sports) signed a commitment to "eradicate" homophobia, organised by Andrew Purchas OAM, Duncan McGregor, Merrilee Barnes, and a group of others involved in organising the international Bingham Cup tournament. Relative to other sport bodies such as Cricket Australia and Rugby Australia... our research has found the AFL has done little, as an organisation, to fulfill it's commitment. A link to the ABC preview story is below, and you can read a summary of research on the AFL here: www.outonthefields.com/AFL. https://lnkd.in/g_yeeA7F
