Volunteer Lawyers for Justice’s Post

Thrilled the ecosystem of support for the legal sector re: sustainability issues has just got even richer! This is a course for any lawyer who wants to deepen and broaden their understanding of how law can enable the necessary transition, and how their role as a lawyer can help drive this.

I hope that any young people out there who are considering a career in the law get to hear about lawyers like Paul Powlesland. There so many things I could post about this new story, but I'm currently thinking about this aspect in particular: So many people assume that a career in the law is staid, for conformists who don't like to rock the boat (excuse the river pun!). It's often assumed it's about maintaining the status quo. The law is exactly the place to be if you want to challenge the status quo. You have to do so by upholding your professional duties, but the law is there to right wrongs and to create a fair societal framework. Paul Powlesland is working on extending that framework of fairness to nature too. Another lawyer who doesn't hesitate to use the law to challenge the status quo (where this isn't providing fairness or it's allowing an abuse of power) is Jolyon Maugham KC, founder of the Good Law Project. Another inspiring lawyer, Lady Hale (former President of the Supreme Court), talks of the importance of "moral courage". I was reminded of her phrase when reading this article about Paul Powlesland. I decided around the ages of 12 or 13 that I wanted to be a lawyer. As I navigated my teenage years, I was into the late 80s/early 90s alternative scene and was passionate about various social and animal rights issues. I didn't have any role models already working in the law. When I told people I wanted to be a lawyer I was often met with surprise. When I first started my law degree I felt out of place (I can't resist another river pun...I felt like a fish out of water). I did have various wobbles in the first couple of years of my degree about whether law was right for me, but here I am 30 years later. I have found my place in the law, where hopefully I can bring my own 'moral courage' and make a positive difference in some way. But I do think of my younger self and, back then, if I'd been able to hear stories of role models in the law like those I've mentioned above, I'd have been so inspired. They probably existed, but I certainly didn't know about them. I really hope that careers advisors, law schools and law departments in universities are making aspiring lawyers aware of the huge breadth of work and activism that's happening today in the law. I hope they don't just focus on what's happening in the mainstream of the law, but look beyond, at the inspiring work towards the edges too. A win for nature as the Nature Restoration Law passes EU Parliament! The law contains binding targets for member states to restore at least 30% of degraded habitats by 2030, 60% by 2040 and 90% by 2050.
