Always looking to extend a celebration, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice fondly throws back to last week’s New Jersey State Bar Association/New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law 2024 Professionalism Awards Luncheon. The most prestigious awards paid tribute to individuals who uphold the legal profession’s highest ideals and who have significant career achievements. At the luncheon, VLJ’s Cathy Keenan and Jessica Kitson were excited to celebrate a few familiar faces: Jeanne LoCicero, Legal Director of the ACLU of New Jersey, was recognized with the Charles J. Hollenbeck Award, which honors an attorney in a governmental agency or nonprofit organization; and Kevin Kelly, Associate Clinical Professor at the Center for Social Justice at Seton Hall Law, was recognized with the Lighthouse Award, an award that honors individuals who exhibit the utmost professionalism and integrity throughout their legal career and who serve as an inspiration and guiding light to their colleagues in the bar. Both Jeanne and Kevin are cherished friends of VLJ, and their accolades and achievements remind us that our efforts as legal professionals go beyond the courtroom—it’s about the lives we touch and the communities we uplift. Many congratulations again to Jeanne, Kevin, and all the honorees! #VLJNJ #ThrowBackThursday #NJSBA #ACLUNJ #SetonHallLaw #ProBono #CivilLegalAid #FreeLegalHelp #FreeLegalServices #NewJersey

Whilst the weather hasn’t quite caught up yet, it’s time for the summer edition of #CitySolicitor magazine - the joint publication of The City of London Solicitors' Company and City of London Law Society (CLLS)! It’s a pleasure for me to hand over the editorial reins to Salome Coker, my having accepted an offer to step up to the role of Chair of the Editiorial Board. And what a great and important first edition it is for Salome, focusing on experiences of Black heritage lawyers both in the City and further afield. A plethora of excellent and incredilbly important articles, spannning: ➡️ racism within the profession, with Chair of the CLLS Colin Passmore setting the context, ➡️ the fact that just 1% - or just 90 of the 13,403 partners at major City law firms identify as Black with input from Julian Richard of extense, ➡️ how to be one of the 1% with the insight of Sandra M Wallace CBE of DLA Piper, ➡️ thoughts from Leslie Thomas KC in how we might change the dial and combat unconscious racism, ➡️ an exploration as to whether Black lawyers are treated differently to other minority groups with valuable insight from Leon Stephenson of Reed Smith LLP, ➡️ a recent study from the Legal Services Board on the impact of counter-inclusive practices on legal professionals and why ED&I can’t just be treated as a buzzword, ➡️ the cultural change needed to plug the leakage of Black talent from the profession with thanks to Raphael Mokades of Rare, and ➡️ the experience on the other side of the pond, including input from Brian Newby of Cantey Hanger LLP, one of Howard Kennedy LLP’s friends from the Meritas Law Firms Worldwide network. And there is still space for articles as eclectic as: 💡why it’s time for us lawyers to stop making like Humpty Dumpty and get off the fence when it comes to AI - with input from Suraya Tegally at Addleshaw Goddard, 💡 my usual motoring column - zooming in on reasons for optimism when reflecting on the historic lack of representation for those of Black heritage in the motor industry, 💡 the return of the mighty Le Caprice to the London restaurant scene - and reflection upon the CLLC’s very own wine Committee - all courtesy of our resident journalist and gourmand Maroulla Paul! 💡the usual selection of Livery news and the magazine’s traditional “last word”! Please do give it a read over your lunch hour or on the commute home! ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
