There's no denying it: there are folks struggling right now. It's messy out there, and it can feel like there's no reprieve from all the nastiness. Social media certainly doesn't help at times (and yes, I am aware of the irony of using social media while decrying negative effects.) Some of our agency partners are overwhelmed with requests for service. There is something we can do about it. I'll give you the Cole's Notes version of the starfish story. A man throwing land-bound starfish back into the sea tells a skeptical passerby that his action didn't save ALL the creatures, but made a difference to the ones he tossed back. And that is why, if world and local events are getting to you, give volunteering a shot. Few of us have the power and influence to sit down those who do and say "Stop that. Fix this. Help them." I know I wish I did. But what you can do is learn how to say on a smaller level, "Please don't do that. It's ruining the environment. See?" "Let's get those people into a shelter." "Would you like me to repair that door? I can." Will it make a difference on the world-wide scale? Maybe not. But you have just shown someone that dumping their trash on the rail trail is not good for the animals that live near it. You've helped someone survive on the streets for another week or month. You've helped a struggling single parent make their home more secure. You've helped someone. Someone who may feel like paying it forward in the future. It may not have been a grand gesture, but you made a difference to that starfish. Come and see who would love for you to join their organization as a volunteer. https://buff.ly/48p5ewI You can also go there if you are a registered non-profit and would like to sign up with us to help you get the people you need. #CommunityBuilding #HelpingHands #VolunteeringIsGoodForYou #VolunteersWanted #ThoughtfulThursday #candoattitude #starfishstory Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce Peterborough County Trent University Careerspace Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough

Wondering how a @virtualassistant can help grow your business? Virtual Assistants are partners in helping your business grow ... at least, the right one will be. Sure, we keep you on track, but you need someone who knows the ups and downs of running a small business or nonprofit. I have experience with both. I've helped run my husband's IT business for 20 years, I manage my local Meals on Wheels, and I've volunteered at several local nonprofits and animal rescues. I understand the rollercoaster! Let me help you navigate your business. #admin #assitant #wfh #businesspartner

A solid piece of advice? Raise your hand. I’m not only talking practically, though I do encourage speaking up and sharing your perspective. Since April is #NationalVolunteerMonth, I’d love to talk about raising your hand to give back to your community. I’ve always encouraged my family to give back by volunteering, doing things within our power to make a difference in the community we live in. I view it as all of our responsibility to give back. At Silfex, we’re given paid time off to volunteer. I believe this is being part of the community we live and work in. One of the things I love most about our culture is seeing how much our team members give back to the community. When there is a call for help, we raise our hands. Recently, there were devastating tornadoes in our area. The team jumped into action – donating water and using volunteer time to help community members impacted by the storms. It’s inspiring. It makes me even more proud to work with the team. It makes me a better community member and it helps to build the culture of giving. What does volunteering mean to you? How does your organization support giving back to the community? How does that impact your employee experience? #Culture #GiveBack

Volunteering can make a real impact for the organization of your choosing. Whatever is important to you; animal shelters, mentoring, American Red Cross, Big Brother Big Sister, or even volunteering at your kid’s school. There are endless possibilities to get involved and make a difference. Not sure where to start? Think about a cause that is important to you, and look them up. See if they have an existing method of volunteering, and if you don’t see anything listed, just reach out directly. It is rare for someone to refuse free help, so just put yourself out there! Alternatively, if your organization has regular volunteers, or you are familiar with a group of volunteers, you can use this month to show them your appreciation and support. Reach out and see how you can be of help, or show up to their next event with drinks and snacks for the volunteers. At the end of the day, volunteering is simply giving the gift of your time to a worthy cause. Every little bit helps, and will make a huge difference. Making giving easier to fight poverty and enrich lives in County Durham and the Tees Valley, empowering our #SmallButVital local charities and the communities they serve.
POV: the ups and downs of running a Community Foundation. In the last seven days at County Durham Community Foundation Last Wednesday A visit to The Genesis Project Middlesbrough to meet with Reverend Kath Dean, as the project has just been granted the Kings Award for Voluntary Service – effectively, the MBE for voluntary services. A community garden where people can plant and pick cabbages, lettuces and tomatoes. An eco-shop, stocked with everything a family needs for a week at heavily discounted prices, a clothing bank, hot meals and craft sessions. A volunteer-led, community hub that focusses on self-sufficiency, Reverend Dean told me it’s all about “lifting people up,” so much so, they’ve been able to offer jobs to some of their volunteers. Last Thursday A phone call with a potential donor who doesn’t believe in foodbanks, who suspects foodbanks are being taken advantage of, who can’t accept the harsh reality of poverty, and the way it steals not just health and wellbeing, but energy, opportunities, time, futures. Thursday is sadly not an uncommon experience! But those conversations serve as a timely reminder that not everyone is going to share your view, understand why you changed jobs to try and make a difference in your community. Today But then there is today, a day with a donor who came in and said "been a fantastic year, let's do it again – I will make a donation in December." Their mantra – "I like my giving to solve problems, big or small, urgently today or longer term." We’re very fortunate to have many such people as our supporters and fundholders, who want to make a difference and trust us to do exactly that. To help us ensure that initiatives like The Genesis Project can solve many problems and maybe "lift" their communities. #CommunityMatters #CommunityGiving Video by the team at Recognition PR

One of the many avenues of outreach our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers provides is our year round Care Package Distributions to #homeless and less fortunate individuals. Our distributions have been our most consistent #outreach project since 2013. Our amazing #Volunteers organize and execute the distributions, alternating between a mobile distribution and a stationary distribution. Currently, we are blessed with the ability to assist an average of 1,500 people per month; in multiple cities, in multiple states! Our goal with distributions since 2013, has been to provide essential necessities to those in need. Necessities that we may take for granted, are viewed as a luxury to those without. Some of the items we hand out include food, clothing, bottled waters, hygiene items, first aid supplies, socks, shoes, books, seasonal items, and lists of resources available in the area. We also utilize our time in the community, retrieving feedback of needs and issues, by those in need. Engaging with individuals, learning their stories, and providing them with hope and acknowledgement. Our distributions continually evolve. Addressing needs, while making available the proper resources. Tangible donations are the lifeblood of our distributions. Your contribution of any of the items below, help to ensure each and every distribution is effective and impactful. Learn how you can help us by #donating, #volunteering, or by contacting us at any time. www.WhoIAmFoundation.org #TeamWhoIAm

Enabling business owners to spend more time executing their strategies and less time managing finances. | Follow for insights about building businesses, accounting firms, and teams.
At HoganTaylor, generosity and community service are an important part of our culture. Every year, each employee can spend 24 hours of community service to do whatever they are passionate about. This could be: ➡️ Working at a soup kitchen ➡️ Coaching a Little League team ➡️ Volunteering at an animal shelter Over the last few months, our CEO at HoganTaylor, Randy Nail, has emphasized the need for generosity toward not only each other at the firm… … but in our communities as well. To track our efforts and make progress towards this initiative, we: ✅ Set specific annual community service goals for each office ✅ Are providing monthly volunteer opportunities for team members ✅ Are hosting quarterly lunches & learns, providing opportunities to learn about different non-profit organizations and find new ways to get involved. This is such a special initiative, and I can’t wait to see what team members take part in and what kind of impact we create in 2024. What are your favorite ways to give back to your community? #accountingandaccountants #entrepreneurship #smallbusiness #business #success
