NATO member countries now have advanced technology at their disposal for secure and high-speed tactical communications. NATO’s ratification concludes a development cycle that was conceived according to a visionary approach to interoperability that remains unique worldwide. The development cycle was performed by an exceptional team that was able to operate in a cohesive and supportive manner, despite comprising professionals from six different companies in six different countries. The study considers the technology landscape of future integrated terminals that have the capability, from a single device, of delivering SATCOM services across an array of orbital constellations (LEO, MEO and GEO) and the span of frequencies and modem technologies that exist on military, government and commercial systems (MILSAT, GOVSAT, COMSAT). This is a worthwhile read in Global Defence Technology Magazine talking about the role of mesh(ed) networks in the future of battlefield communications. The integration of mesh networks with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites is certainly the future, allowing connectivity with points anywhere in the world. However, I would argue that IEEE mmWave technology is superior to 3GPP when it comes to connecting troops on the ground. IEEE 5G mmWave networks are self-healing, which means if a node is out of range or otherwise unavailable, the network re-configures to maintain full connectivity by another node stepping in to complete the circuit. https://bit.ly/3STWetD
