Have you heard that Chicago is considering revamping the Magnificent Mile? Renderings by design firm, Gensler, unveiled a more pedestrian-friendly makeover. The area is typically a tourist hotspot but it's also where about 120,000 residents in Chicago live and many would like the Mag Mile to get a facelift. In the renderings, a lane of traffic has disappeared and added are cafes, water and art features instead with a potential bridge that would connect Michigan Avenue over to Oak Street Beach. It had been a while since I saw this historic sign closed, and I wondered about its fate. Then I got the answer, quite surprising but, being intriguing from a design perspective, I am curious about the developments. The former Barney's building on Seventh Avenue is shedding its designer suits. After the luxury department store succumbed to the changing retail landscape and went bankrupt in 2019, the space remained vacant for two years, briefly serving as a Spirit Halloween pop-up. The building's new owner, architect and developer Raymond Chan, intends to convert the structure into condominiums, following a similar approach to his previous projects in Flushing, Long Island City, and the Lower East Side. Additionally, there are plans for a ground-floor retail space featuring a beautiful modern design. What’s your take? Do you still go to the mall? In my opinion, Malls have some of the most beautiful architecture. They are honestly some of my favorite buildings. I love the way light usually comes in through the large glass roofs, or skylights. I love the glass storefronts and water fountains. But now, it sad to see those malls that were once full of life and stores and see them almost completely empty. It might just be my upbringing and lack of electronics back in the day, but when I was young, malls where the it place. It was common for all of my friends and I to to hang out at a random mall. We couldn't buy anything but we got to go out and hang out. We got to walk around and chat, pretend to meet girls. We would hang out at the food court, go to the theater, hit up the arcade, etc. Honestly, it was a good time and a great place to just People Watch. So now, each year, I get excited for this time of year. Because despite online shopping, the crows come out for Christmas shopping and and for a little while bring life back to these beautiful buildings. I get to people watch, I get to take my kinds to see Santa and, once again, I can enjoy white noise that comes from crowds. A lot of good memories for me in these places.
