In order to fully prepare for the future, it's crucial to understand the past. The history of automotive connectivity is not just a tale of technological progress; it's the foundation upon which the vehicles of tomorrow are being built. It’s important to look back on how far the industry has progressed. For example: 1986: Cars CAN do better By the early 1980s, traditional hard-wired electronics couldn't keep up with new automotive design needs. Engineers at Robert Bosch GmbH developed a new serial bus system, enabling electronic control units (ECUs) and subsystems to communicate, allowing for new features via software. 1998: How to get the MOST out of your car stereo In 1998, as audio CDs replaced analog storage and interest in navigation and mobile phones grew, the auto industry needed a multimedia networking standard. The MOST Cooperation developed the MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) technology, now a global standard for multimedia networking in cars. 2000: FlexRay takes on the 21st century vehicle As auto makers continued to raise the bar on safety, comfort, performance, and environmental impact, they began to develop an interest in “X-by-wire” applications, in which functions would be purely electrical, with no mechanical fallback, with advanced control and safety systems being obvious targets. 2002: LIN, or, there must be a cheaper way To reduce CAN-driven networking costs for non-essential components like power windows and air conditioning, European car manufacturers used various serial communication technologies. This led to compatibility issues and spurred the development of the LIN (Local Interconnect Network) protocol. There is a lot more to explore about this history, but even more to look forward to. Marvell is pioneering the shift to a unified Ethernet-based network, poised to bring about an era where every component in a vehicle can communicate seamlessly—paving the way for smarter, safer, and more connected cars.
