“Today we see lake foreshore fish and wildlife habitats suffering from ‘a death by a thousand cuts’ because the impact of each lot built out can be justified as minor,” according to a new report recently published by Living Lakes Canada. The Foreshore Integrated Management Planning (FIMP) 2019-23 report details how lake foreshores in the B.C. Columbia Basin region are changing due to urbanization and development. It presents the findings and recommendations for protecting at-risk fish populations in the 10 surveyed lakes: Kootenay, Slocan, Arrow and Trout lakes in the West Kootenays, and Whitetail, Whiteswan, Moyie, Windermere, Columbia, and St. Mary lakes in the East Kootenays. This comprehensive four-year project is a testament of the value of FIMP as a powerful cumulative-impact assessment tool for freshwater conservation. Hinkley Point C will soon be asking for views on new plans to create 800 acres of saltmarsh on the River Parrett.   The new saltmarsh would create new habitat for fish and animals, improve local water quality and help prevent flooding. It’s one of a number of proposed measures to help wildlife and the environment around the Severn estuary which also include planting of seagrass and kelp, developing native oyster beds and removing weirs on three rivers to help migrating fish to reach their breeding grounds.  The plans are being developed with Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and the Environment Agency as a natural alternative to installing an acoustic fish deterrent. The deterrent had been proposed to keep some fish species away from the power station’s cooling water system.  It would use 280 speakers to make noise louder than a jumbo jet 24-hours a day for 60 years and its impact on porpoises, seals, whales, and other species is unknown. The proposals for habitat restoration and other changes to Hinkley Point C’s design, such as alterations to the way the power station will store spent fuel, will be included in a public consultation launching on 9th January. Happy #TexasWaterWednesday! Clive Runnells Family Mad Island Marsh Preserve is part of an expansive coastal prairies and wetlands system along the Texas coast. It covers over 7,000 acres of land and consists of fresh, intermediate, brackish, and saline marshland with sparse brush and flat coastal prairie (TPWD). Mad Island was purchased in 1987 to preserve coastal wetland habitat for wintering waterfowl (TPWD). The preservation of habitat within this wetland system helps reduce erosion and contributes to the overall health of Matagorda Bay, which eventually reaches the Gulf of Mexico. The preserve provides critical habitat for many wildlife species, including over 250 bird species, including the endangered whooping crane. In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and Texas Water Development Board, Texas Water Trade (TWT) continuously monitors water quality at the Clive Runnells Family Mad Island Marsh Preserve. TWT maintains conductivity loggers in the field to measure the water’s salinity, which is a marker of estuarine health and productivity. Continuous, long-term monitoring in this region will help us better understand the dynamic nature of these types of shallow estuarine lake environments of Matagorda Bay. Locke Falls on the lower Isinglass River is a popular area for hikers and waterfall enthusiasts. One of my favorite things about aquatic plant management is how dynamic it is. The plant species are always changing as well as the sites. Brett Hartis, PhD and I took advantage of the weather today to check on the status of #yellowfloatingheart on Lake James with North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as we work collaboratively on this project. Although yellow floating heart may seem appealing with its beautiful yellow flowers and floating leaves, it has the ability to produce dense mats that can cover large areas of shallow water. These mats can hinder recreation, impact fish and wildlife habitat, and displace beneficial native aquatic plants. Yellow floating heart can also reproduce by seeds and fragments, which increases the risk of spread to other waterbodies. #cleandraindry #aquaticplantmanagement
