Chapter Eighteen This week I celebrated 1️⃣8️⃣ years with Scooter’s Coffee!!! The most popular question: how many stores did we have when you started? My answer: around 50, no more than 100. I may not have been keeping track back then as a youngin’, but looking back over the years and our company growth trajectory helps put my soft and careful answer into perspective. I remember the 100th, 200th, 300th, 350, 450, 500… and last month witnessed the 800th store opening for Scooter’s Coffee. Next question: what has kept you here? This drums a couple answers. 1. The Core Values have become my personal CV’s - Love, Humility, Courage, Integrity. 2. The coffee for the taste, of course, but also the coffee sourcing. The farmers we have met that select our coffee by hand picking and natural processes. How neat is that? 3. The company’s foundation, culture, mission. All of these have adapted with growth but have minimally changed. Everyone cares for one another, our franchisees, and customers. A lot. 4. Relationships - the people I have met inspire me every day and remind me of point #3. 5. What we do matters. Feeling accomplished at the end of every single day. Making a positive impact daily absolutely fills my coffee cup. What started out as a summer job has turned in to a career with a very special, lifetime brand. From my perspective- Ones tries to buy something from you and the other one tries to sell something to you! WHO LIKES TO BE SOLD SOMETBING THEY WENT TO BUY? No one! This is why Amazon is so successful, no pressure to buy! Was CarMax thinking outside the box when they started the message, “START HERE” we will buy your car? Great example of why people become entrepreneurs. Choosing entrepreneurship because you prefer independence and creative control is common. Many entrepreneurs thrive on the freedom to pursue their vision without the constraints of a traditional job. It's about following your passion and creating your own path.

What’s the hardest job you’ve had? As I think about this question, there are few over the years that come to mind… ✅Working in retail at Sak’s Fifth Avenue, right out of college and my performance goals were based on selling $50 dollar lip glosses…to tourists. No one wanted to spend that on makeup—especially when they just wanted to take pictures. ✅Leading the launch of a rare disease drug. The days were long, nights were late and there was always a problem that needed to be fixed. ✅Working for a company where their values didn’t align to mine. The work was challenging, but the hardest part was feeling internal turmoil about the executive decisions and direction. Everyday was agony! But the one job that is the hardest… is being a mom 🧒🧒🧒 When you are faced with something “hard” — consider if it’s “energy filling”. Even if something is challenging it can still be rewarding, align to your values and make you feel fulfilled. ”I've had such a huge mindset flip since I started here. I used to be really immature and make a lot of poor decisions that didn't help me grow professionally, personally, or financially. I was kind of just stagnant until my manager gave me some advice that really stuck with me: 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠. I always felt like the outsider in high school and even in college, where all my classmates were also interested in neuroscience. I just never felt like I had values that aligned with the people around me. ~ 𝐈 𝐦𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐛, 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭. It feels like I was always searching for a peer group that shared my ideals and values, and pushed me to become a better version of myself. They just don’t have the understanding of the culture that has been built here. My dad always told me to focus on the fundamentals. If you have solid basics, no matter what happens, you can find a way to succeed.
