Pinterest is leading the way again. This Social Media today post caught my eye this morning. Easy ways to bake inclusion and diversity into your social and creative processes from the word go as opposed to adding as an afterthought or not including at all. Last year, I visited Pinterest HQ in Toronto for work and was again blown away by their ability to read and forecast culture and lead the way in social/search/marketing practices. So much more than pretty pictures and inspo boards. Their strategy and outlook values diversity, equity and inclusion through lenses of ethnicity, disability, race, gender, and age. Did you know there’s a strong business case for inclusive business and marketing practices? Need proof? 1. Diverse companies produce 19% more revenue. https://lnkd.in/g_-4BqXX 2. I recently learned how Pinterest has taken a monumental leap forward in promoting inclusivity with the launch of its innovative new tool: ‘body type ranges’. What’s so amazing about it? It's... → Inclusion at the Heart of Inspiration → A Broader Vision for Inclusivity → Real Impact, Real Engagement → Responding to User Needs The new feature empowers users to self-select the body types they want to see in their search results for women’s fashion and wedding ideas. InstaReality: The Reel Impact of Instagram on Cultural Norms Imagine this: You're at a dinner party, the room buzzing with conversation and laughter. The aroma of delicious food fills the air. But as dinner winds down, a familiar scene unfolds. The women rise, gathering plates and serving, while the men continue their conversations. It's a scene I've seen too often, but this time, something was different. Flashback to a week ago, I was scrolling through Instagram, and a reel caught my attention. It shared the exact same insight that how it's a cultural mindset all over the world that men keep talking at dinner tables but it's the women who get up or initiate it by serving the food or taking it back when people are done. This reel didn't just stay on my screen; it played on loop in my mind, challenging me, urging me to think differently. Fast forward to the party, and there I was, witnessing the same pattern. But this time, the reel had sparked a fire in me. I found myself gently encouraging the women to sit, join the conversation, and share the moment. And to the men, I suggested lending a hand. This wasn't about just breaking the norm; it was about rewriting our roles and creating a space where everyone is part of the conversation or gets help to be a part while the work is divided. This is the untold power of Instagram. A simple reel had not only altered my perspective but also inspired action. Instagram, in my experience, is far from a 'net negative' social media platform. It's a catalyst for change, a tool for societal reflection, and a platform where a single post can move us from passive observers to active participants in shaping a more equitable society. How Immigrant Moms Pioneered the Underconsumption Core Trend Now Popular with Gen Z on TikTok As a Gen Z investor in consumer brands, I’m constantly fascinated by the evolving trends that shape our industry. One such trend gaining traction on TikTok right now is underconsumption. When I saw this for the first time on my feed - creators showcasing their empty plastic greek yogurt containers to store snacks, empty glass jam jars to store spices, etc - my mother came to mind. Underconsumption Core Trend -  Gen Z has taken to TikTok to showcase a lifestyle of intentional buying, focusing on mindful consumption. Fatigued by the influencer-driven overconsumption culture that has been pushed on us for the past decade, we are championing a shift towards underconsumption. Gen Z is challenging today's norms of excess, promoting "buy it for life" brands/products, and advocating for the planet by making thoughtful, deliberate purchasing decisions. The Original Leaders: Immigrant Moms - Long before TikTok, immigrant moms such as my Mom were the unsung pioneers of this movement. These women have always practiced underconsumption out of necessity and wisdom. They embody the principles of sustainability and intentional living, often making do with less and prioritizing the essentials. Their approach to consumption is not just about saving money; it's a profound respect for resources and a deep understanding of the value of every item they bring into their homes. The CPG Industry's Role -  While we are part of an industry that thrives on consumerism, we also have a responsibility to promote sustainability. By championing intentional buying and supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly practices, we can align our investment goals with the values of our consumers. The Pinterest inclusion fund seems like a really good initiative from what I think of as "the nice social network." They say "The Pinterest Inclusion Fund is now accepting applications for UK-based small merchant businesses, independent lifestyle publishers and boutique creator agencies that are either owned and operated by, or create content or products for historically underrepresented communities." Those communities are defined by Pinterest as "BIPOC, disability, plus-size and LGBTQIA+ communities" See the link for full eligibility details.
