I've been reflecting on a recent conversation between Walmart's CEO, Doug McMillon, and CPO, Donna Morris, two words Doug pointed out have been resounding in my mind - "opportunity" and "service". Doug described these as his guiding principle for the year ahead and the essence of Walmart respectively.   As I've pondered these words, I've recognized their profound intersection: the opportunity to serve others. This concept, though not new, is a vital component of our roles as servant leaders. As such, we should strive to embody this ethos and seize every chance to serve.   This week's Well-Being Wednesday post is inspired by this theme - finding fulfillment through service to others. As you know, the act of service is beautifully cyclical - as we extend our hands in kindness, we invariably find kindness extended towards us. So, this week, I encourage you to go the extra mile with your service through volunteer work.   Volunteering often peaks during the holidays, leaving many organizations in need during the rest of the year. Consider lending your time, resources, or skills to one such organization. The impact you make will be deeply rewarding for both you and the beneficiaries of your service. If you can involve your team in your volunteer efforts, even better (#SparkGood at #TeamWalmart)! Picture your favorite coffee shop. You walk in and order at the counter. You make conversation with the barista you know by name. It’s a typical dialog exchange until it comes time to pay. 🎬Scene change to *my* favorite coffee shop. A Place at the Table coffee shop in Raleigh, NC is a “pay what you can cafe”. Hmmm. That’s different. Well, when you pay for your coffee and meal, you can add a tip of any amount that directly “pays it forward” for someone who cannot afford a meal. Coffee with a purpose.☕️ "A Place at the Table" is a non-profit café with a clear mission: 🍴To provide community and good food to all, regardless of means. This coffee shop is helping fight food insecurity while building community through their unique business model. Patrons can pay a suggested price, pay a little extra to pay it forward, or work for a meal. The cafe operates with a small staff and relies on volunteers from local businesses, church groups and colleges, to serve food, clear tables and greet guests. For the past few months, I have served as Good Work Austin's interim executive director. It has been an incredible experience, and I am in awe of the work our board and staff accomplish every day with limited resources. That is why I am raising $1,000 today during Amplify Austin. I would deeply appreciate it if you could donate any amount to achieve this goal! If you aren’t familiar with Good Work Austin, let me share a little about the organization and what we do. Our Vision is for a healthier Austin connected and uplifted by the local food and beverage community. We foster healthy careers in the local food and beverage industry through professional development and advocacy for more equitable practices. Our four major programs are: Healthy Workplaces: Brining workplace development training into GWA Affiliated businesses, including DEI, Harassment prevention, and other training. Culinary Training:  We provide paid training for individuals who want to end the food and beverage industry and provide the Healthy Workplaces training, assist participants in getting their food handlers license, and place them into quality, local, well-paying jobs with our members who promise to pay a fair wage and provide benefits. Good Work Austin Community Kitchen (GWACK): Aims to create a meaningful paid opportunity for businesses to provide meals to Austinites in need, including as an emergency response. GWA Membership: Bringing together locally owned food and beverage businesses owners in community building, resource sharing, and advocacy. If you can donate just $10, you are providing one meal for our community kitchen. If you are feeling super generous, a gift of $1,500 pays for a person to be trained in our culinary training program. A gift of any size makes a real, direct impact in our community. 

Through We Rise Together: For an Equitable & Just Recovery, we are learning about the outsized impact grocery stores have on neighborhood economies. We Rise Together, a collaborative of 160 funders led by The Chicago Community Trust, has supported some 40 real estate developments in long-disinvested communities since 2021. As these projects open, we’re learning about the impact of these places through a robust evaluation, another benefit of a collaborative funding model. With our evaluation partner Mastercard Data Services, we are seeing that grocers produce immediate and measurable impacts on total traffic to an area when they open and close. Closing a larger grocery store produces a further reaching effect than opening a smaller local grocery store. As more projects open their doors, we will continue to share what we’re learning through our ongoing evaluation. #Chicago #Philanthropy #WeRiseWednesdays

Campaigns are won and lost on leadership. No other single factor impacts a campaign’s outcome. Gone are the days that a cowboy gift officer or a dedicated philanthropy director could successfully campaign alone. Instead, campaigns are about aligning the organization's top strategic priorities with donors' top philanthropic priorities. Because campaigns involve and impact the community on such a deep and personal level, leadership from the community is critical, acting as an invaluable endorsement. Yet, we often allow our leaders to dictate their own level of engagement in the campaign process, resulting in unclear and inconsistent leadership as well as frustration and demotivation among other volunteers. February 12 to 16, 2024, is Chamber of Commerce Week in British Columbia. Therefore, it is an opportune time to recognize and celebrate the meaningful work undertaken by the chambers of commerce and boards of trade in communities across the province. These local business organizations are more than just community boosters. They are convenors, collaborators and catalysts for positive change and are integral to creating sustainable, healthy communities. Whether it’s advocating to local, provincial or federal governments for changes to public policy on matters that stretch far beyond taxation to include societal issues like housing, healthcare, and mental health and addictions, developing innovative programs and initiatives to support business, or leading charitable works that contribute to social well-being, local chambers of commerce and boards of trade are the trusted “boots on the ground” that understand the unique needs of their communities.
