First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, along with Deputy Minister of Defense Nataliia Kalmykova, visited Walter Reed on July 9, 2024. During the visit, she expressed hope for including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the international medical partnership initiated by Ukraine for direct cooperation between medical institutions worldwide. Medical institutions from 17 countries have already partnered with 43 Ukrainian hospitals.

PULSE and The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine have signed a memorandum of cooperation 🤝🏻
This includes TCCC training for military personnel, blood far forward, and our project aimed at the re-socialization of war veterans. This kind of cooperation will help us to have a more significant impact on these life-saving activities.

‘Trauma and loss’…’suffering’…’damage’; all good words to describe life with significant injury, regardless of the theatre in which it was sustained. These injuries certainly don't care where they were sustained.
IMHO, those who are discharged from the military through significant injury are more often than not separated more by posting opportunities, than by personal levels of commitment or dedication to service.
These sacrifices should be recognised for the impact that they have on the lives of service members, whether as a result of the battlefield or the football field, and not just by the families who deal with the ongoing consequences, or by the doctors who are required for ongoing treatment.
Good initiative.
In a recent piece for The Guardian Australia, Royal Commission Chair Nick Kaldas called for the Australian Defence Force to consider formally acknowledging and commemorating military personnel whose service has lead to wounds or loss of life away from the battlefield. bit.ly/3UBJYix#DVSRC

I couldn’t agree more with NATO Military Committee Admiral Rob Bauer: security and stability is not a given, we have to do something for it - be it in the area of defence, be it in the area of law enforcement/justice and home affairs. Additionally, the industry must fulfill its social responsibility by ensuring that its products are secure and safe to use, rather than prioritizing profit over security. Because in the end they should have an interest to maintain stability and security as this are the prerequisite for a healthy economy. Good talk German Marshall Fund of the United States 🙌

The second article in Volume 68, Issue 5, Retiring Military Jurisdiction Over Military Retirees, written by Prof. Robert Leider, argues that courts applying court-martial jurisdiction to military retirees for conduct unrelated to military service have misunderstood the Constitution's status-based test for military jurisdiction, which clearly distinguishes between active members of the regular forces and militiamen.

At the meeting of the Allied Chiefs of Defence this week, Chair of the #NATO Military Committee Rob Bauer, Admiral RNLN stated:
“The tectonic plates of power are shifting. And as a result: we face the most dangerous world in decades.
In order to strengthen our collective defence and at the same time support Ukraine in its existential fight, we need a whole of society approach.
We need public and private actors to change their mind-set from an era in which everything was plannable, foreseeable, controllable, focused on efficiency…. to an era in which anything can happen at any time. An era in which we need to expect the unexpected. An era in which we need to focus on effectiveness.
In order to be fully effective also in the future, we need a warfighting transformation of NATO. For this too, public-private cooperation will be the key.
The war against Ukraine has never been about any real security threat to Russia coming from either Ukraine or NATO. This war is about Russia fearing something much more powerful than any physical weapon on earth: democracy.
If people in Ukraine can have democratic rights, then people in Russia will soon crave them too. That is what this war is actually about. In 2024 a record-breaking 2 billion people on earth will cast their vote in a democratic election, and yet the concept of democracy needs to be defended more than ever.
The Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian Armed Forces are doing this in a way we have never seen before. In the darkness of war, they are a beacon of light that shows the world what it means to fight for what you believe in.
Today is the 693rd day of what Russia thought would be a 3-day war. Ukraine will have our support for every day that is to come. Because the outcome of this war will determine the fate of the world.”
