Celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth 𝐘𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰. As we celebrate Black History month, it reminds us to pause and recognize the many contributions Black Americans have had on our stories. It is especially important to note the ties between credit unions and Black History. As a financial cooperative, we’re using this month to celebrate and share the history and culture of Black Americans in the world of finance. Sister Cities Project aligns with the growing number of voices who want to honor Black History and say, every February, that "Black History is American History". We honor, respect, consider and reflect on Black History in our work, year 'round. History influences where we are today with equality and indicates how much work there is still yet to do in creating a world where equality is the norm. Limiting the history we are exposed to, creates a blindness to our challenges. As an Ally, you can stay the course and continue to be open to learning about all Black history in order to address systemic systems that are barriers to equality. When Carter G. Woodson established Negro History week in 1926, he realized the importance of providing a theme to focus the attention of the public. The intention has never been to dictate or limit the exploration of the Black experience, but to bring to the public’s attention important developments that merit emphasis. Black History is American History

As we recognize Black History Month, we celebrate the contributions of African Americans who shaped York County and beyond, in all periods of U.S. history — including the history being made even today. What will you do, this month and year-round, to recognize Black history?

When Americans commonly know their history, then #BlackHistoryMonth will not just be proudly celebrated by Black Americans. Non-Black Americans will celebrate Black History Month with nearly as much pride because they will know they have benefited from longstanding Black struggles to make freedom, equality, and democracy a reality for Black Americans by making it real for all Americans. When we say Black history is American history, it is not a slogan. It is a historical reality.
