Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, is a monumental date for African American communities in the United States, marking the end of slavery back in 1865. Despite being announced in 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation took more than two years to take place, and slavery was not officially abolished in all Confederate states until June 19, 1865.
